How to Speak about a Death
March 12, 2020

We have been very busy at Morrissett the past few weeks striving to show our appreciation toward those whose hard work & positive contributions help support our community. In February we partnered with three local elementary schools to deliver Valentines to those veterans who are currently receiving treatment at McGuire VA Medical Center. At the end of January we delivered craft supplies to 5th grade classes at O.B. Gates, Beulah and Hopkins Road Elementary. The students then created cards that were delivered to veterans to bring some extra kindness on a day focused on caring. We enjoyed seeing the students’ colorful, heartfelt creations and hope the cards brought smiles to the recipients’ faces. We are also proud of our local 5th grade students for their efforts to show the community’s gratitude to our Veterans for their service & sacrifices.

Each 5th grade class was also given a white box to decorate and hold the Valentine’s cards they created. The boxes are currently on display in our lobby so that the public can vote on their favorite. The winning class from each school will receive a $50-dollar Visa gift card. Come by and cast your vote!

On March 3 Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service also partnered with Affordable Spa Services to provide relaxing chair massages for the caregivers, staff and volunteers of Bon Secours Community Hospice House. It was a wonderful event and greatly appreciated by all the staff. We recognize that the work of hospice caregivers is vitally important as they provide care for individuals who are nearing the end of their life. This also places such caregivers at an increased risk of emotional burnout, so we wanted to provide them with an opportunity for relaxation. The physical & emotional benefits of massage, as well as being a recipient of care rather than a provider, can help individuals unwind & release stress.

In addition to the massages there were was also a raffle for two items to be awarded to members of the staff. Eileen won a beautiful pink hydrangea and Alisha won a $50 restaurant gift card. Congratulations!

We will continue to host an event each month during this next year in observance of our 150th anniversary. Our Tuesday, March 31 at 7pm we will hold our next event, a Place of Worship Active Shooter Awareness: “Helping the community prepare if the unthinkable happens.” Leadership & security teams of local houses of worship, all faiths & denominations, are encouraged to attend. Members are also welcome. The program will be held at Ironbridge Church, 10900 Ironbridge Rd., Chester, VA 23831. There will be representatives from the Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office, Police Department, Fire & EMS, and Federal Government Agencies. There is no fee for this program. We at Morrissett are grateful for continued opportunities to partner with & help give back to the community in which we live and serve.
