Intro
Funeral & Cremation Estimator
There are many reasons families choose to begin the arrangement process on our website.
- It is a convenient way to begin making arrangement for yourself, or someone else.
- It is an efficient and educational way to prepare for an upcoming arrangement conference.
- It provides an overview of the decisions that need to be made.
- It estimates the financial scope of the choices made regarding burial and cremation services.
You may find that you don’t know the answers to all of the questions and may not be prepared to make final decisions. That is not unusual; you are encouraged to complete the sections to the best of your knowledge and give some thought to the choices you can make. Our staff will offer guidance, answer questions and review all the information you provide when we visit with you.
You are always welcome to call (804) 275-7828 or email us at info@Morrissett.com if you have any questions or need assistance with our planning guide.

Disposition
What type of Disposition will be used
Let me explain, “Disposition” is what will ultimately happen to the decedent. The three common forms of disposition are Burial, Cremation, or Anatomical Donation. None of these three are a funeral. The funeral is the actual remembrance ceremony, these can be formal Religious Service, Life Celebration Service, Memorial Service, Graveside Service, simple family gathering at home or friends getting together at a meaningful location to reflect on a life lived well.

Burial

However, if you are planning on a public visitation and viewing, it is customary for the decedent to be embalmed.

Cremation
Cremation
Our charges (without funeral ceremony or facilities for viewing) include transfer of remains to funeral home, basic services of funeral director and staff, basic refrigeration. The crematory's fee ($425 M-F) and the Medical Examiner's fee ($50 required by Virginia statute) will be added to the funeral home's charges for the service selected.
State and local laws do not require a casket for direct cremation. If you want to arrange a direct cremation you can use an alternative container. Alternative containers encase the body and can be made of materials like fiberboard or composition materials (with or without an outside covering). The containers we provide are: cardboard or composite wood containers. The minimum of an alternative container is required by the crematory and Virginia statute.

Public Visitation/Viewing
If you desire not to have any public visitation/viewing, some families choose to have a simple family gathering to say goodbye. In this case we will prepare the decedent, dress them in the clothing you provide and then allow up to 20 family members to come in and have a private viewing and an opportunity for a final farewell.

Viewing/Visitation Options
Viewing/Visitation Options
If none of the viewing/visitation options are chosen then we will make arrangements with the family for someone to make an identification view of the decedent. This can be accomplished a few different ways:
- If the decedent is transferred into our care with a family member present then we will have that family member sign a Witness of Transfer.
- If no family member is present when we bring the decedent into our care then we will arrange for a family member to view the decedent in our facility and attest to the identification.
- It provides an overview of the decisions that need to be made.
- If no family member is present when we bring the decedent into our care then we will arrange for a family member to view the decedent through a photo that we will take and transmit it to them.

Transfer and store in our refrigeration
Now, for those that do qualify for donation, we consider it an honor to partner with the VSAP to ensure that all body donations are cared for in a manner that keeps them in good condition to ensure their acceptance for donation. For individuals that pass away at home or in a facility that does not have refrigeration, we are available to transfer and store in our refrigeration until VSAP can dispatch a vehicle for transportation. (VSAP only has staff available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.) We do have a minimal charge for this service.

Where as we applaud those individuals that donate their bodies to science for the betterment of all mankind, we would like to advise you that not everyone is accepted into the Virginia State Anatomical Program (VSAP). Sometimes , due to capacity at the program, weight and or height of the decedent, medical history of the decedent, or any combination of these issues may cause the donation to be refused. We suggest that you always have a backup plan.
