  1. May you find the peace only God can bestow. There will always be space in your life that can’t be filled but a strong faith can be a help to soothe the emptiness.

  2. BG your light will continue to shine, along with your Smile. One of the Best Deacon’s I ever had. After Bobbie’s passing, he would come to visit at Harley shop and even brought a pair of jeans for his many traveling adventures. Got and RV, but NO Harley. Mrytice so glad you looked him up from your high school days and brought him to Virginia.

Bonnie and I first crossed paths in 1958 in the Air Force Aviation Cadet Navigator training program in San Antonio Texas. His friendly, easygoing manner quickly endeared him to his contemporaries. Late in the program, when we were allowed to have cars, Bonnie acquired a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk, which became known as his “Golden Hawg”. After graduation, now commissioned as Second Lieutenants, he went on to fly as a Radar Observer on a high performance interceptor, the F-89 Scorpion.
About three years went by before we came together again. I was totally surprised to find him again as a classmate as we began our Air Force pilot training. He had a reputation as a good, but aggressive pilot. There were many stories about him trying to black out his instructor in the break over the runway numbers for the final turn. We both soloed at about the same time and were ceremoniously thrown into a stock watering tank behind the squadron. We were then on a high as we flew the (then new) T-38 supersonic trainer in the final phase, the first ones to do so at Vance Air Force Base, OK.
Upon graduation, we both opted for assignment as T-37 flight instructors, and both at Reese AFB, Texas. Once again, our careers moved in parallel. Our two young families shared many wonderful events during our two year stay at Reese. Always the pilot, Bonnie kept a light single engine airplane near our base at Reese. It was there that some of my kids got their first flying experience, and have remained in aviation to this day. Even in recent months, my son Kevin, now a captain for United, would check in on Richmond layovers with Bonnie, and swap flying stories.
I was then transferred to Wichita Falls, Texas, about a hundred miles away, but we managed for the two families to rendezvous on weekends at RV campsites located between our two bases.
Subsequent assignments took us in different directions, and I lost track of him until after his retirement from the Air Force. In the late 1900’s, I was able to compile a list of our original flight training cadet classmates which later resulted in a series of reunions all over the country. Bonnie never missed any of these events. He was always the most eager to attend and reconnect with his flying buddies.
In the language of pilots, when one passes, we say he has “flown west”. As Bonnie has “flown west”, may he remain in the shadow of the wings of Our Lord until we meet again.
    With admiration and respect,
    Your Wingman,
    Mike Ferris
