Obituary

Calvin W. Wilbourn, 62, of Charlottesville, VA and formerly of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estelle B. and Rubert W. Wilbourn. Surviving him are his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Crystal Wilbourn of Vienna, Virginia, and his brother, Roger Wilbourn of Chesterfield. Calvin was a graduate of Thomas Dale High School (1969) and the University of Virginia (1973), where he studied math and physics. He worked for many years as a self-employed contractor in the Charlottesville area and could build or fix just about anything. Calvin possessed a brilliant mind. His insatiable thirst for knowledge and his enthusiasm for learning led to his many varied interests. From architecture, to history, to politics, to art, to computers, he was a self-taught expert on a wide range of topics. He approached learning and problem-solving with an open mind, remained perpetually curious about the world around him, and always encouraged others to do the same. Calvin enjoyed spending time in nature, tending to his garden and his pets, watching classic movies, traveling by train, and tinkering with anything that needed fixing. He approached everything in life with a positive attitude and a sense of humor. Above all else, he was devoted to his family and friends. His greatest pride and joy in life was his son, Brian, whom he coached in baseball, basketball, soccer, and life. Calvin will be missed by all who knew him. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Bermuda Memorial Park in Chester, VA, with Rev. Pat Fiordelise officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 West Broad Street, Richmond VA 23220-2057.
