Obituary
Mann, Colonel Horace Pete III, U.S. Army Retired, age 78, went to Heaven on Monday, January 10, 2011. He was born May 16, 1932 in Matoaca, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne Elizabeth (Peck). His children include sons, Horace Edward Chip Mann and his wife, Becki, and their son, Horace Williams Mann of Richmond, Peter Jeb Mann and his wife, Sherry, and their son, Henry Edward Mann of Fairfax, a daughter, Martha Anne Mann Atkinson and her husband, Thomas T. Atkinson III of McKenney, and Col. Dwight Pearson (U.S. Army Retired) and his wife, Joanne, and their sons, Peter and Patrick Pearson of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by sisters, Susie Mann of Brewer, Maine and Ann Mann Lazarek and her husband, Jack, of Pawcatuck, Connecticut. He was predeceased by his parents, Horace Mann Jr. and Annie Woodruff Mann; as well as a daughter, Sue Ellen Mann. A lifelong resident of Chesterfield County, he began his service to his country and the Commonwealth by attending Virginia Military Institute. Working his way through the ranks as a career officer in the Virginia Army National Guard and the U.S. Army, his commands included the 176th Engineer Group headquartered in Richmond. He graduated from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania in 1978, and retired in 1992 from the military as a Colonel and USPFO for Virginia. At that time, he was given the rank of Brigadier General in the Virginia State Forces. He served his community as a member and chairman of the Board of Elections for Chesterfield County since 1996; as an officer and member of Chesterfield Historical Society; co-chair for the Chesterfield County 250th Anniversary Committee; commander for the First Virginia Association; president of the Eppington Foundation; Richmond Chapter president for the Association of U.S. Army; On Your Side Call Line volunteer for WWBT Channel 12; and was serving at the time of his death as chairman of the Board of Deacons of Southside Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held at Southside Baptist Church, 6000 Iron Bridge Rd., Richmond 23234, at 11 a.m., Friday, January 14, 2011. Burial will be private. Dear Ann, I was so sorry to hear of your loss; hope you and your family find comfort in each other and the memories you share. I am the daughter of Hampden "Hank" S. Mann Jr. and just last week ran across a picture of "Pete" as a small boy with his Father and Grandfather. I would love to share a copy with your family and will try to send at a more suitable time.
