Obituary
Curtis L. Bennett, age 61, son of the late Jenner Bennett and Wilma Bennett, was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, on May 7, 1964. The final years of his life were marked by a gradual decline in health. After a lengthy stay at MCV/VCU Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, courageously fighting to recover, Curtis peacefully told his wife, Jerriet (Jeri), that he was ready to be with Jesus. On Friday, January 9, 2026, Jesus stretched out his arms and welcomed Curtis home.
From an early age, Curtis was actively involved in church ministries at the Mission Facility in Petersburg, Virginia. He served faithfully as a youth counselor and as a drummer in the music ministry. Desiring a deeper relationship with God, Curtis continued his fellowship with First Union Baptist Church.
During his teenage and high school years, Curtis excelled in athletics. Known as “Benny” on the basketball court, his talents earned him numerous awards, trophies, and team championships. Off the court, Curtis demonstrated remarkable maturity and responsibility. While still in school, he helped care for his mother during a long-term injury and watched over his younger siblings. To provide for his own needs, Curtis repaired lawnmowers and cut grass throughout the community to purchase his school clothing.
After graduating from high school, Curtis worked at Standard Drug Store Warehouse and other retail establishments before beginning a long and dedicated career with Loveland Distributing Company in Richmond, Virginia. Over more than 20 years, he worked his way up from cleaning lines to a supervisory management position. Curtis was deeply respected and genuinely loved by upper management and coworkers alike. They were family to him, and he regretted having to retire earlier than planned due to health concerns.
In retirement, Curtis found joy in caring for his lawn, riding his lawn mower and striving to keep the grass green. He enjoyed crafting birdhouses, watching squirrels steal tomatoes from his garden, and spending time outdoors. Most of all, Curtis cherished relaxing in his favorite recliner by the warmth of the wood stove and cheering on the Washington Commanders. He delighted in spirited debates with rival football fans.
Curtis especially looked forward to his dialysis appointments at DaVita, where he enjoyed friendly football rivalries with his dialysis nurse, Tundra, an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. Even after a rare Commanders loss, his spirit remained lifted and soared even higher after a win. Curtis never shied away from challenging any Cowboys fan, whether friend, foe, or family member, including his brother-in-law, Charles Hilliard.
Curtis was a loving and devoted husband, father, sibling, friend. and companion. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 32 years. Jerriet Bennett; one daughter, Teresa Scott; one granddaughter, Alexis Scott: and a great-granddaughter on the way, River Grace. He is also survived by two sisters, Susie Hicks and Irish Windless (Sammy); two brothers, Kevin Bennett (Sylvia) and Roger Davis.
Curtis also leaves to mourn his extended family, including brothers and sisters-in-law William and Diana Braxton, Carolyn and Charles Hilliard, and Ronnie and Teri Braxton. Preceding him in death are one sister, Deloris Toone, and two brothers. Jenner Bennett and James Davis along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

May the love of God our Father and the peace of Christ Jesus be with the soul of brother Bennett. The strength and comfort the Lord provides in times of sadness and bereavement cover the family.

As I was strolling through the obituaries I was shocked to see someone whom I worked with years ago at The Home Shops and whom I would run into when out eating lunch or dinner. Curtis was always a very, very nice and pleasant young man with warm smile. Rest in peace , until we meet again.
