Obituary

The world lost a remarkable success story on October 27, 2021, as Dr. Edgar Venson Wallin (80) departed this Earth after a long and hard-fought battle with liver and kidney disease, but he was at peace in the knowledge he was going to be reunited with family and friends that he meant so much to, and that meant so much to him. Edgar received his Bachelor and Masters degrees from Western Carolina University and his Ed.D from Southeastern University. This led to a 42-year calling of dedicated commitment to the education of children in Henrico County and Chesterfield County, rising from teacher to principal to Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, all the while keeping in mind what mattered most to him – providing the opportunity for academic excellence and growth for students. A shining example of his focus was the development of the high school specialty centers in both Henrico and Chesterfield, beacons of excellence that many take for granted today. Additionally, he was one of the main designers of the current Matoaca High School. These are but a few of the administrative and academic innovations Edgar brought to the job he so loved. All of these achievements would qualify as a “success”, but here is where the “remarkable” comes in. Edgar was born on July 21, 1941 and raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He worked many early mornings and late evenings on the family farm, excelling in school in between his morning job driving a school bus (and successfully winning a driving competition!) and completing his evening chores. Along the way, he suffered a near fatal accident in high school that he survived only through the use of an experimental drug that was considered the last option. Needless to say, Edgar met the challenge and fought through that just like he has everything else in his life, and truth be told, this most likely shaped his commitment to fight through the challenges he faced in life, wherever they may have lain. Upon graduating from college in three years, Edgar packed up and headed to Virginia to begin his teaching career, with a total $100 in his pocket. He quickly ascended through the ranks, demonstrating success in each stop along the educational career ladder, including serving on many evaluation committees for public schools in Virginia and across the country. Edgar did not rest upon his many educational laurels – he continued to look for new challenges that he could excel in. From racing stock cars and working on the pit crew of a wildly successful race team, to owning the Bradley Bridge Market, to working on his farm, and to serving on the Planning Commission for Chesterfield County, he thought the world of all of the friends and teammates he worked with as part of these adventures. The most important adventure, however, and without a doubt, the most successful, is the adventure he had in helping shape the life of his grandson, Troy. He was determined to provide him with a multitude of life lessons through farming, working on tractors, and other projects that not only provided real world knowledge for Troy, but enabled him to learn respect and commitment along the way. His influence certainly enabled Troy to become the fine young man he is today. Edgar will be greatly missed by his surviving and much-loved wife of 59 years, Jane, his son, Venson, daughter-in-law, Sharon, and grandson, Troy. Edgar was preceded in death by his mother, Emily Wallin, father, Rankin Wallin, and his sister, Sandra Clementson. He is survived by his sister, Janice Ramsey, and brothers-in-law Boyce Ramsey and Tom Clementson. Husband, father, grandfather, and brother, we all look forward to the day we can take the place beside you that we know you are saving for us. Visitation and Services will be at Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Service at 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, Virginia 23234 on Saturday, October 30, 2021, with visitation beginning at 2:00 pm and services following at 3:00 pm. 1. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Edgar was a very special man, educator, and public servant. His contributions to Henrico and Chesterfield will last for many lifetimes.

  2. So sorry to hear about Dr. Wallin. He was a true gentleman and loved by all of our family. It was my great pleasure to work for him at Henrico High School as his secretary and later at the School Board Office in Henrico County as his administrative secretary. Dr. Wallin loved kids and always looked out for those in need. I have known him to go out and buy clothes and school supplies for several young men who could not do so for themselves. He even took my daughter a glass of water on stage and handed it to her from behind the curtain when she was giving a speech to her fellow graduates because he knew she was a bit nervous. Quite the gentleman who will be missed. Rest in peace dear friend.

I am so saddened to learn about Edgar’s passing. He, along with his wife, Jane, we’re
my primary mentors in teaching and leadership. Edgar was a brilliant leader. He always made decisions keeping students at the center. He taught us all about being creative in our professional development for teachers, creating Curriculum Academies for teachers. My career blossomed under his leadership. I will be forever grateful for his guidance and support. My heart goes out to Jane, Venson, Sharon, and Troy. Well done, good and faithful servant. You made a difference in the lives of those you touched.
