Obituary

Dr. John W. Kincheloe, Jr. died in Richmond, Virginia at the age of 100 on Monday, November 27, 2006. The son of a Baptist minister and a native of Crewe, VA, he was the oldest of four brothers. His early education was in Richmond and at Rocky Mount, NC. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was president of the Class of 1928. He was a member of the honorary fraternity Omicron Delta Kappa, and in 1981 was president of the Board of Directors of the Frederic W. Boatwright Society of Alumni. After graduating from college, and after a brief pastorate at Matoaca, VA, he enrolled as a student at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he received the Th.M. degree and later the Ph.D. degree in religious education. During his seminary years, Dr. Kincheloe served several rural pastorates in western Kentucky. He went on to pastor seven churches in Virginia and North Carolina, including Main Street and Calvary Baptist Churches in Emporia, First Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro, First Baptist in Norfolk, Hayes Barton in Raleigh, and Branchs Baptist Church in Richmond. At Branchs, he was honored as Pastor Emeritus. After retirement in 1971, he served for eight years as interim pastor at Mount Hermon Church in Caroline County. Dr. Kincheloe held numerous denominational positions, including Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Biblical Recorder, NC Baptist Paper; Trustee of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; Trustee of Fork Union Military Academy; President of the Virginia Baptist Pastors Conference; and Member of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board. Dr. Kincheloe is survived by his dear wife of 66 years, Barbara Farmer Kincheloe; daughters, Jane K. McDonald of Mariemont, OH and Anne K. Easterling of Richmond; sons, Paul L. Kincheloe of Chesterfield and John W. Kincheloe, III of Durham; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was a beloved pastor of many, a kind and caring patriarch for the family, and a loyal and devoted husband. He was high-minded in all he did; he was a gentle man and a gentleman.
