  1. I will always hold Edith close in my heart. I knew her over 55 years as my brother Dan married her daughter Pam.
We went through many good times, sad times, but innumerable happy times.
I will never forget when my father passed away unexpectedly at home. Edith was there within 20 minutes and gathered the family very quickly.
She was always ready to step up and help!!

I especially remember when my Mom was very ill. She was always ready to help in any way. She brought food to my home and patiently sat and talked with her. At that time, Edith was in her late 80’s!!

Edith was joyful and kind and I always enjoyed our conversations as late as one month ago.

Thinking of the family at this time.

May she rest in eternal peace and may God bless her richly!!!

  2. Ken Shumaker says:

Hello, I’m Kenneth Shumaker, Jr. , Edith Kitchen’s nephew. Also speaking for my wife Ann, I want to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Edith Kitchen. Each passing of a loved one is a sad affair but the passing of this great lady is especially so. She was the true matriarch of the Shumaker family. Whenever there was a problem to be solved or an event to be organized , she delivered every time. Her along with her wonderful daughter Cheryle was instrumental in landing me a position at the Ben Hogan Company in Henrico in 1993. She offered me her home to live in for 3 weeks until with her help landed me a room to rent where I stayed until 1995 when I moved to West Point to live with my soon to be wife Ann. That job which became the Bag Boy Company and then the Baby Jogger Company turned out to be my career job. Though the company was bought out and moved out of Richmond in 2015, I put in a total of 22 years and was the longest tenured employee at that time. All because someone cared so much for my well being. That was Edith Kitchen. I am so thankful that she was such an integral part of my life. I remember her firm hugs and she was so happy to see her kin folks. She was always the first person I wanted to greet at the many Shumaker reunions that she was always in charge of organizing. She represented the very best of the Shumaker family, and her three children made her and her wonderful late husband Mac so proud. My one regret was that I didn’t visit Edith at her home nearly enough after her move to Amelia. I just don’t venture away from home much but I sure wish I would have in Edith’s case. Ann and I did call to check in her now and again but I wish I had done that more often too. I’m afraid with Edith’s passing that the Shumaker family may never come together again now that the glue that held us together has gone to be with the Lord. Lord I miss her so much already. It was nice to see such a large gathering at the funeral service yesterday and seeing family members again. I’m sorry this seemed long but I just wanted family to know how great this woman was and what she meant to Ann and I. Thank you.
