Obituary

Edyth Sams Wallin passed away on Sunday, September 20th, 2020 at the age of 87. She was born in Marshall, NC on August 14, 1933 to Homer and Eva Rice Sams. She attended the Women”™s College at the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), graduating in 1955 with a degree in education and later receiving a masters degree from Western Carolina College. On June 14, 1955, she married Jesse Clayton Wallin and enjoyed 57 happy years with him until his death in 2012. She taught briefly in North Carolina, but soon moved to Richmond, where they made their home and raised their children ““ Diane Wallin Black (Bill) of Atlanta, GA and Bryan Clayton Wallin (Hope) of Chesterfield, VA. She taught for over 35 years in the Chesterfield County school system, with almost 20 of those years at Falling Creek Middle School as “Mrs. E. Wallin”, teaching sixth grade English and math. A voracious reader, she was never happier than when she was sitting down with a book or doing the daily crossword puzzle in pen. She also took a not-so-secret delight in driving a series of sports cars, starting with a 1969 red Mustang. Edyth and Clayton enjoyed their travels with their close friends George and Charlotte Martin, and she always eagerly anticipated her annual trip to the beach and attending the theater with her treasured friends Diane Glover, Patty Giles, Donez Poindexter and Louise King. Strikingly beautiful with deep auburn hair and a ready smile, she enjoyed bowling, watching her grandchildren compete in swim meets, gardening, and the holidays. She was also a member of Beulah United Methodist Church, and had recently been making her home at Harmony at Ironbridge in Chesterfield.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Lynn Lockwood Sams. She is survived by her children and five adored grandchildren — Michael Black of Washington, DC., Catherine Evans (Josh) of Woodstock, GA, Breagan Wallin, Jacob Wallin and Jessie Madison “Maddie” Wallin, all of Chesterfield, VA, and many nieces and nephews, including Edgar and Jane Wallin. The funeral will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, with visitation at 11 am at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road and a 1 pm graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Virginia. The family would like to thank the staff at Harmony at Ironbridge for their attentive care over the last few years. Flowers are welcome, or a memorial contribution may be made to Virginia Swimming Athlete Scholarship Fund, Charlottesville Community Foundation, PO Box 1767, Charlottesville, VA 22902
