Obituary

Brown, Eileen (Bowden), 71, of Chesterfield departed this life peacefully on June 11, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Kevin and her parents George and Vera Bowden. She is survived by her children, Matthew (Mary) and Daniel (Casey); One brother, George (Mary), three nephews: George, Timothy, and Michael as well as several beloved cousins. Eileen’s greatest treasures were found in the five grandchildren that she held so dear: Rachael, Sarah, Katy, Maddux, and Naomi. Before moving to Richmond, Eileen was born in Newark and raised in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Once in Richmond, she spent those early years raising her two sons alongside a small army of other children in her home.  She would then spend 21 wonderful years as the Pastoral Associate for Christian Formation at Saint Augustine’s Catholic Church.  She will be fondly remembered for her generous spirit, her practicality, and in the ease with which she was an equal opportunity lover of all people. Her family and friends will cherish memories of unending bowls of soup served while sharing belly laughs, holding space for the messiness of life, and the lending of a nonbiased ear while providing` quiet, unassuming wisdom. She was magic. May we now see her in the stillness of the morning as the sun rises, in a solidly warm cup of coffee, a “just right” book for any of life’s twist and turns, and in the strangers that we are fortunate to meet.

Services will be held on June 24th at 3pm at St. Ann’s Catholic Church 17111 Jefferson Davis Highway South Chesterfield, VA 23834. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation in the chapel at 2pm.

  1. Eileen was the catechist leader when I was attending RCIA classes at St. Augustine for adult confirmation in 2012. I also interacted with her frequently at church and she was always a joy to be around. During RCIA classes, we spent several weeks together delving into the Catholic faith, going on interesting “field trips” around Richmond, sharing meals, and engaging in many interesting discussions. She really made us stop and think. She created and gifted to the class a beautiful journal of confirmation day, describing the events in exquisite detail, right down to noting the lovely fall weather we had that day. What a gift and I still have it, of course. Although I lost touch with Eileen after she retired from St. Augustine, I have always remembered her and was so saddened to hear of her passing. What a special lady. Please accept my deepest condolences.

  2. Thinking of you. Our condolences to all the Brown family

  3. The St Augustine’s WINGS Ladies will miss Eileen’s kindness and her love she had for our Group of ladies. We were thrilled when she said she had been praying for 3 years that someone would start WINGS at St Augustine. Through her prayers we are going into our tenth year in September. Without her prayers we could not had the success we all share. Love and miss you and we know you are in heaven. Love all the Ladies of WINGS
