Obituary

Eleanor “Byrd” was born on June 7, 1928, the first-born child of John R. Davis and Mattie B. Simpkins Davis. She was the oldest of their 13 children. Known to us as Mom, Nana, Byrd, Aunt Byrd and Great-Nana, she touched our lives as a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend.

Always quick to give advice and share her wisdom, Byrd also quickly shared her smiles and laughter. She loved music and could often be found singing in the hallways of Tyler’s Retreat to her fellow residents and the staff. She loved to dance and was the first on the dance floor on any occasion. She loved to explore new places and was always ready to travel.

Byrd loved her community and her neighbors. She was a devoted Christian and one of the early members of Drewrey’s Bluff Presbyterian Church, that later became New Covenant Presbyterian. There she participated in the “Ruth” Women’s Circle and served on numerous committees. She was a member of Woodmen of the World and a longstanding homeowner in the Bensley Village neighborhood.

In heaven she was greeted by her loving husband, Cecil M. Harris; her devoted son, David M. Harris; her mother and father; as well as numerous brothers, sisters, other family members, and dear friends, who went before her. It was surely a joyful reunion!

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Morgan (Glen) and Sharon Barrett (Bryan); her grandchildren Mathew Morgan, Rebecca Johnson (Lee), and Benjamin Barrett; and her great grand-daughter, Clara Snow Johnson.

  1. Sharon, I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. My childhood memories are dotted with mom’s like yours. It was a simpler time, but one where everyone looked out for the neighborhood kids. I can’t help but smile as I think of the reunion of Byrd, my mom, Lib, and Fran all gathering around and chatting about things. All the neighborhood mom’s in heaven are welcoming Byrd with open arms, I’m sure!

I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers,
    Nancy (Robertson) Hoover

  2. Praying for comfort and peace for all the family during this time.
