Elizabeth Winfree Quaiff, 99, passed away September 6, 2022.  She was born September 18, 1922 in Richmond, Virginia to William Ashton Winfree and Lucy Ryland Winfree. Elizabeth’s passion for family, music, nature, and teaching was boundless.  She attended Beulah School and taught 2nd grade at Beulah as well. She attended Chester High School and graduated from Mary Washington College.  She was a lifelong member of Beulah United Methodist Church where she sang in the church Choir for over 70 years.  She was a true blessing to those that knew her. Elizabeth married her childhood sweetheart, Charles Reid Quaiff, Sr. on June 5, 1943. They celebrated over 50 years of marriage before his passing in 1994.

Elizabeth is survived by her children, Ann Byrum, Betsy Q. Forbes, Judith Q. Nickels and Charles Reid Quaiff, Jr.(Karen);  grandchildren: Randy Dudley, Ashton Byrum, Marcy Meiller, Rebecca Boney , David Nickels, John Nickels, Reid Quaiff and Christine Quaiff; great- grandchildren: Sydney Meiller, Drew Meiller, Nicole Dudley, Ishai Nickels and Dylan Byrum. There have been many folks to whom we are forever grateful for looking out for and caring for Mama while she was at Springdale and Lucy Corr: her good friends at Springdale who looked after her; Charlotte Wilson who always kept an eye on Mama Q;  Beth Fulk, mom’s faithful companion later in her stay at Springdale; and Allie Herndon,  a true Godsend and blessing who was so much more than a ”sitter”  but more like a friend who dearly loved Mom.

  1. Praying for the Quaiff family during this time. Remembering her singing in the choir! She is now with Charlie Sr in Heaven. God’s comfort and peace for all of you.

  2. I taught with Mrs. Quaiff at Beulah Elementary for 7 years in the 70’s and have very fond memories of her as an educator and a friend. She was such a mentor and support for the young teachers and made a special effort to make personal connections with each of us. I often thought of her as my “school Mom”.
She was also loads of fun!!! I especially remember her as a teammate on our teacher volleyball team…she was always ready for any challenge to enjoy life to it’s fullest!
And… she was a great hostess for our social gatherings…I still make her spinach salad for pot luck dinners and someone always asks for the recipe.
My condolences to her entire family…I know she will leave a void that cannot be replaced. She talked about you whenever we reconnected over the years and was so very proud of all of you!

Condolences on the loss of one so dear. What a little light of optimism and hope.

  4. Our family was so grateful to have known such a delightful teacher and such fine member of our life in the Chesterfield community. Her life was gift to us and to our daughters and her memory lives on in our hearts.

  5. Oh my goodness! What a great miss in your family. I was thinking of her so much today, and decided that I would check to see if she’s in my Google searches. You see, this gentle speaking spirit taught me at Beulah Elementary School when I was very young. I still have conversations about her, and I am 66 years young right now, I am quite sure that my memory of her will be forever in my mind. That tribute on her was so sweet, that when I saw her pictures that I’m sure we’re in the Bellwood Archives, there were two that I remembered fondly. it was like I was seeing her all over again, and must tell you that I cried.
    Goodbye Sweet Lady….Mrs. Quaiff
