Obituary

Mrs. Evelyn Cabrera Heatwole, 67, passed peacefully on the morning of February 18, 2024, with her husband by her side after a three-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was a warrior who fought bravely until the end. Evelyn attended the Dominican College of Blauvelt, New York, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education. She later attended Western Michigan University where she earned her Master’s degree in Blind Rehabilitation Teaching. She spent the next 41 years working in the Veterans Administrations in Connecticut, Puerto Rico and Virginia. Here in VA, she served as the Visual Impairment Services Team Coordinator, coordinating services for blinded veterans between 1988-2021. Her veterans were her passion and she advocated fiercely for them. Evelyn Cabrera Heatwole was preceded in death by her daughter, Christie A. Heatwole; and her father, Ramon Luis Cabrera. She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Raymond L. Heatwole; her mother, Gregoria Munoz-Roman; two brothers, Ramon L. Cabrera and his wife Caridad; Milton Cabrera and his wife Lourdes Cabrera; one sister Lourdes Cabrera-Cobb; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service. Her memorial mass will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 1 PM at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. Interment to take place on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 12 PM at Dale Memorial Park.
