Obituary

Georgia Gwin Holder, 77 of North Chesterfield passed away after a long illness June 8, 2020 at home with her husband Gene by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents Sarah Barnes Gwin and Milton Jackson Gwin and siblings Ellen Gwin Lilly and Milton Jackson Gwin, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Edwin Eugene “Gene” Holder, Jr. and their five daughters, Marcia Conner (David), Sarah “Beth” Paxson, Susan Samer (Glenn), Mindy Burchett (Scott) and Karen Sikon (Josh), eight grandchildren: David and Tyler Conner, Gregory Paxson, Christopher and Kristin Samer, Katie and Zach Burchett and Ellenore Sikon, her longtime friend Sandy Meek True along with many other loving family members and friends.

She was born in Patterson, NJ but lived her young life in the Jollivue area outside of Staunton, VA. She moved to Richmond where she graduated from Johnston Willis School of Nursing in 1965 and spent her career working in Women”™s Health. She was a nurse leader at several local hospitals opening new facilities and then found her work home at MCV Hospital as the Nurse Manager of Labor & Delivery where she retired in 1996. For many years she would be stopped while out running errands by former patients she had helped through the delivery of their babies and many times she could recall that experience with unexpected detail.

She was a natural leader and passionate for the teaching mission of MCV, loving the ability to help mold nurses and physicians into caregivers with compassion. She worked as an expert witness for several local lawyers in malpractices cases providing her decades of knowledge to help patients and their families. She was calm under pressure and had a way of taking charge of any situation. She was generous with her time and always ready to be a surrogate mother for anyone who needed her help which created special bonds with many of her staff and their children. She is still lovingly remembered by her work family.

Georgia was a born storyteller with the gift of the long form story, she loved to entertain family and friends with tales of guts and glory of the medical field and family life.

After retirement she focused her energy on her family, especially her grandchildren. She was always ready to take them for the night or the weekend and loved to escape to the cabin in the mountains at Millboro Springs. She also loved taking beach vacations with friends and looked forward to the entire family spending a week together at Myrtle Beach. She cherished having her extended family over for dinner at least once a week. She loved tomatoes more than any other food and looked forward to the first crop out of the garden Gene grows for the family, she also baked the best zucchini bread all summer long.

She cared for people all her life but the last five years she has been lovingly cared for by Gene and their daughters, her niece Ashley Parker and a host of care providers at Encompass Health and Hospice whom the family wish to thank for the exceptional care she received.

A memorial service will be held at Morrissett Funeral Home on Saturday June 20, 2020 from 2-3pm, located at 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, VA 23234. Following the memorial, the family will receive friends for a celebration of her life at the Holder family home. 5. My sincere sympathy to Georgia’s family and friends. She was an amazing woman and her memory will stay with me forever. She was my first boss as a young RN. I will remember her walk, her talk, and all her accomplishments , especially how she carried the “work family” at MCV Main 6 L&D (1986-1990 was my time there)-She took care of us all- nurses, residents and attendings alike. I love you Georgia~
