Obituary

Ilene McFadden Penland, a beloved mother, sister, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on December 2, 1940, in Covington, Virginia, she grew up with a passion for teaching and a commitment to fostering knowledge in her students. Ilene earned her master’s degree in special education and devoted her career to education, making a significant impact as a teacher for Chesterfield County.

Ilene’s life was rich with experiences and connections. A proud member of the Chesterfield Courthouse Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was an active participant in her community, holding the title of Chesterfield County Master Gardener. She had a profound love for genealogy, tracing her family’s roots and sharing her discoveries with those around her. She also enjoyed creating water color paintings, a hobby her sister encouraged. A dedicated traveler, Ilene made cherished memories with her son as they explored England and France. She also drove across all 48 contiguous states as well as Quebec and Vancouver with her family. This journey was particularly meaningful as it allowed her husband to see the sights before his vision deteriorated. Throughout their life together, Ilene lovingly cared for her disabled husband and advocated for the visually handicapped.

Ilene is survived by her son, Frank Andrew Penland; daughter, Dawn Renee Penland; sister, Regena Young; brother-in-law, Ken Young; and nephews Rob McFadden and Alex Young (Meghan Ridgeway); grand-nephew Michael Young. She also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Liam and Katie Penland. Her love extended to her family pets, nurturing multiple cats, dogs, fish, and ducks.

Ilene’s father was a Mason and her mother a member of the Eastern Star. She passed on to her children the importance of treating all living beings with respect, dignity and compassion. She was a quiet, humble, empathetic woman and she was the backbone of the Penland family.

Ilene was preceded in death by: Frank Shields Penland, Henry Bernard McFadden, Sr., Blanche Wells McFadden, H B McFadden, Jr, Frank Penland and Wilma Penland.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the Bon Secours Hospice House in Bon Air or to the American Cancer Society.

In her passing, Ilene leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and unwavering support for her family and community. Ilene will be cremated, and a private ceremony will be held for family

  1. Mrs. Penland was my fifth grade teacher at Beulah Elementary around 46 years ago. To this day, I still tell stories of that classroom, how she managed us all and how she inspired us all to want to learn new things. She was quiet, but the impact she had on my life was tremendous. Thank you for all you did, Mrs. Penland. Renee, I’m so sorry for your loss! She was a wonderful woman.
