Obituary

J. Carl Morris, 90, of Chesterfield, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Frances Wooten Morris; sons, James Carl “Jim” Morris, Jr. (Cheryl), David Palmer Morris; grandchildren, Abby Rickel (Aaron Joseph), James Carl Morris, IV; great-grandchildren, Michael Gormley; Molly and Logan Rickel; brother, Robert Howell Morris (Jean). Carl was preceded in death by his parents, James Carl, Sr., and Florence Virginia Morris; granddaughter, Carla Morris Gormley. Carl was a U.S. Army veteran and a Virginia Tech graduate. He went on to become a well know architect of churches, court houses and banks especially of colonial design. Traveling and spending time at his home on the bay with his family were two of his passions. Carl was a past president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a member of the Commonwealth Club, and a founding member of the Chesterfield Preservation Committee with over 32 years of service. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at Branch’s Baptist Church, with his funeral service being held at 3:00 pm. Interment with military honors will follow in the church”™s cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Branch’s Baptist Church 3400 Broad Rock Blvd., Richmond, VA, 23234.

  1. You all are in our prayers. We thought of Carl all weekend when we were at the Rivah with your family. We loved his stories. And it was wonderful seeing the Bay and the surrounding area through his eyes. All those times at the Bay with him are so special to Karl, Lauren, Charlotte and me. May you find some peace in the coming days among your friends and family.
