Obituary

James Horace Hayes, 76, of Chesterfield VA, went to be with the Lord on the evening of Tuesday, February 21, 2023. He was loved fiercely and deeply and was surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born in Alma, Georgia, where he was known as “Jimmy” and lived most of his adult life in Virginia, where he was known as “Jim”. He was also known for his love of fishing, golf, fast cars, gospel and 50-60’s music, football and peppermint candy. He was an excellent storyteller, sharing stories of his life on the farm in Georgia, his army days, his fishing trips with his father-in-law and friends, of his work buddies and of his family. The stories were usually funny and entertaining, and he enjoyed telling them. Jim wore many hats, husband, father, grandfather, friend, veteran and lifelong Georgia Bulldogs fan. He was a dedicated friend who took time to keep in touch and had a natural charm appreciated by many. He enjoyed frequent road trips to Georgia and Florida to visit family and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Connie and Altman Vickers, sister Linda Hayes Inman, brothers Carol and Curtis Lee and grandson Jack Dawson Jr. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vickie; his five children: Kelly Bump (Edward), Karen Walton (Jerry), Robin Dawson (Jack), Spencer Hayes (Michelle) and Seth Hayes; as well as eleven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Doris Watson and brother Allen Hayes and their families, as well as cousins, and friends and neighbors he treated like family.

The family would like to thank the staff of Traditions Hospice, as well as Chippenham Hospital nurses Ebony, Annie and Ashley of the Neuro-Med unit, and Morrissett Funeral Home, who all went above and beyond and demonstrated tireless compassion when we needed it the most. A special thank you still, to our own Michelle Hayes, NP who showed us the most unconditional love and support and truly carried us.

Visitation will be held at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond VA, 23234 on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 11:00 am to 12:00pm with service beginning at 12:00pm. Burial will be directly at Dale Memorial Park, 10201 Newbys Bridge Rd, Chesterfield, VA 23832 beginning at 1:00pm. A Celebration of life to follow at Hyles Baptist Church in Chesterfield, VA
