Obituary

Carter, Sr., James T., 85, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on January 15, 2011. James was first employed at the Chesapeake Ohio Railway in September 1943 at the age of 17, leaving in November of 1943 to serve in the Navy during WWII. Seaman First Class James Carter, Sr. served on numerous vessels during combat, earning the WWII Victory Medal, an American Campaign Medal, an Asian Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, and a Combat Action Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946, returning home to his wife and the Chesapeake Ohio Railway, where he continued working for 39 years until his retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Louise. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn C. Patterson (Robert); son, James T. Carter, Jr., (Lynne); sister, Viola C. Ferguson; brothers, Junior Moss Carter (Jane) and Harold Bennett Carter (Jane); grandchildren, Tabitha P. Marek (George), Sheilah Patterson, Tonya Patterson, Yvonne (Roger), Jason (Leslie), Adam (Christie), and Joshua Carter; great grandsons, Dylan Thomas Marek and Cayden Thomas Carter; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), where his funeral service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday. Interment will follow at Dale Memorial Park.
