Obituary

James “Jim” V. Collins., 93 went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 20, 2022.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James V. Collins Sr. and Carrie R. Collins.  He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Shirley H. Collins; his daughters, Margaret C. Freeman, Susan C. Gallienne (Charles), and Karen C. Collins; and granddaughter, Meghan T. Robles; grandson, Allen E. Freeman, Jr.; great grandchildren Olivia, Charles and Parker Robles and Harlan Freeman; and brother, Billy T. Collins; along with other nieces, nephews, step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren.  Jim was born in Hobbsville, North Carolina and attended Wake Forest University.  From there, he made his way to Richmond, Virginia where he worked for B.T. Crump & Co and met his wife.  In 1950, he was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.  Returning to Virginia in 1954, he began work at Leonard Paper Ruling Company where he ultimately became the owner.  He was a past president of PIVA and a member of PICA. His love of the Lord led him and his family to Branch’s Baptist Church where he was a member for 56 years.  Serving as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and member of the Chancel and Reflections Choirs filled him with joy.  Dedicated to serving others, he joined the building team at Branch’s helping update homes in the community with handicap ramps, rails and other needs.   From there, he went overseas with the VA Baptists on building missions in Slovakia where he also returned to a facility he helped construct in order to teach ESL to youth and adults.  Always at the ready, he joined the VA Baptist Disaster Relief team (food and reconstruction) supporting needs as a result of hurricanes in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and New Jersey.  The North Carolina Baptist men welcomed him and his expertise in renovating homes damaged by floods and hurricanes. An avid golfer, he was a member of Meadowbrook Country Club for 60 years and served on the Board of Directors several times.  He was able to play the sport he enjoyed so much up to the age of 91.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 from 11a.m. to 12 noon at Branch’s Baptist Church, A Celebration of Jim’s Life will begin at noon. 1. So sorry for your loss

  2. His light might have been snuffed out, but his legacy lives on forever. So thankful God chose you to be my earthly father. You were the best. You will be sorely missed. Grateful for the promise of reuniting one day in heaven. Love you and thank you for so many wonderful memories. Until we meet again….I’ll be missing you. Love, KC

  3. I can only imagine how great of a man your father must have been to have raised such an amazing and caring daughter. I’m sadden by your loss, but comforted by the memories you have shared and have to treasure.

Isaiah 25:8 says that death will be swallowed up forever; and 1 Corinthians 15:26 agrees, calling death the last enemy, which will be brought to nothing. I hope knowing that you will have the opportunity to be with your father again, based on God’s promises in the Bible, brings you much comfort.

    Much love,
    AJ
