Obituary

Jerry Lee Smith, 75, of Chesterfield, VA went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2026. He was born on September 16, 1950 in Richmond, Virginia to the late George L. Smith, Sr. and Mary Thompson Smith. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Deborah “Dee Dee” Smith.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca Ann Smith; sons, Ryan Smith (Tracy) and Alex Smith (Bailey); grandchildren, Lanie Smith and Aubrey Smith; brother, George Smith, Jr. (Nancy); son-in-law, Daniel O’Shields (Keara); and extended family members and friends.

Jerry was a true people person — funny, generous, kind, loyal, and known for his big heart. He graduated from Meadowbrook High School and later attended Virginia Tech from 1968 to 1972. He spent many dedicated years as a Project Manager at Waco, Inc. from March 1981 until May 2013, building lasting friendships and earning the respect of everyone who worked alongside him.

Jerry loved sports from an early age and enjoyed playing football at Meadowbrook High School and maintained many lasting friendships with the team. Later he played rugby at Virginia Tech. He especially treasured his many years at Meadowbrook Country Club, where he shared countless rounds of golf, laughter, and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Family was at the center of Jerry’s life. He deeply loved his children and grandchildren and cherished every moment spent together. Some of his happiest memories were made at the family farm in South Boston, where stories, laughter, and traditions were passed down through generations. After the passing of his wife, Dee Dee, Jerry was blessed to find companionship and happiness again with Becky, sharing many meaningful years together.

Jerry also found great joy on the Chesapeake Bay, where boating and fishing became some of his favorite pastimes. Whether traveling in the motorhome, spending time on the water with family, he embraced adventure and created memories that will be treasured forever.

Jerry was a faithful servant and devoted Deacon at Branch’s Baptist Church, where he lived his faith through kindness, service, and genuine care for others. He also loved teaching his Sunday School class, “the Bubbas,” for many years, and countless people knew and loved him through his teaching, guidance, and encouragement. Much of Jerry’s retired life was spent faithfully serving as the church’s Facilities

Director, where he continued to care for his church family in countless ways behind the scenes. Jerry will be remembered most for his infectious laughter, unwavering loyalty, generous heart, and the way he made everyone around him feel like family.

  4. Becky and Family,
Truly heartbroken for Jerry’s passing. Praying that you will continue to receive the Lord’s blessing of comfort as you continue living for Him. I thought a lot of Jerry as I was sometimes in his Sunday School class, and enjoyed his teaching. Loved his sense of humor, and together we would share some jokes. I wish the Lord’s richest blessing on you, and are loving you bunches. Buddy Collins
