Obituary

Jerry Ray Bishop departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father on October 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Washington County, Virginia, Ray was the youngest child of John H. and Myrtle L. Bishop. Being the youngest of 13 children, he took great joy in the time spent with his siblings and their families.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Ray lived a life marked by selflessness, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he cherished most.

Ray was a part of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He worked hard for his family and was a successful business owner, operating J. R. Bishop Contractor for almost 40 years.

Ray was the devoted husband of Catherine Bishop, sharing 48 years of love and partnership. His greatest pride and joy were his children: Jerry Bishop Jr, Bradley Bishop, Donna Waddell (Dave), Treasa Kelley (Mike), Diana Semones (Kenneth), and Lenny Walls.

Ray’s legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tonya Benfield, Calvin Semones, Colton Pitts, Katie Pitts, Rebecca Dershem (Christopher), Ashley Ford (Antonio), and great grandchildren: Alyssa Benfield, Cody Benfield, Blake Semones, Hunter Ray Semones, Easton Semones, Carter Berger, Cash Berger, Tyler Pitts, Jordan Ford, Roman Ford, Timothy Dershem, Raelynne Dershem, Makayla Dershem, and Parker Dershem with one great, great grandchild Theo Elson. Each of them held a special place in his heart.

Known for his warm smile and generous spirit, Ray consistently put others before himself. His family and friends will always remember his thoughtful nature and the countless ways he touched their lives with his steadfast support and compassion. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Ray’s life. The family will receive friends at 2 pm with a funeral service to follow at 3 pm on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Morrissett’s Funeral Home 6500 Iron Bridge Rd, N. Chesterfield, VA 23234. Reception to follow after the service.

Though we mourn his passing, we find comfort in the memories we shared with him and the profound impact he made on our lives. Ray’s legacy of love and generosity lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of choice, in remembrance of Ray’s giving spirit.

Special thanks from the family to Bon Secour Hospice by Compassus for the tender, loving care provided to both Ray and his family.
