Obituary
John Edward Rogala peacefully passed away, in his home, with his beautiful bride of 55 years, Sherrlyn Elizabeth Rogala, holding his hand. He was surrounded with love by his children and brother. He went to be with his Lord on January 22, 2024. He was welcomed with open arms in heaven by his beloved parents, Edward Joseph Rogala, and Anna Julia Rogala. He is survived by his three children, Rachelle Elizabeth Sullivan (Dennis), Laura Christina Mauger (Miles) and Christopher John Rogala (Liz). Most importantly, he is survived by the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Brandon, Ella, Nathan, Wyatt, Liam, Victoria, Emmalyn, Ainsley and James. He also left behind his faithful furry companion, Teddy Bear.
John was born in Chicago, IL on August 1, 1943. He proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Army, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1987. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois , where he received his bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, and Florida Institute of Technology, where he received his masters in logistics management. Upon his retirement from the Army, he moved his family to Chester, Virginia . Following that move he began to follow his passions. These included woodworking, boating, fishing, cooking, sports, particularly football (Da Bears!) and baseball (Go Cubs Go!) John particularly enjoyed attending any events that involved his grandchildren, and traveling with his wife.
John was a highly spiritual man and devoted Catholic. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 30 at St. Ann Catholic Church 17111 Route 1, South Chesterfield, VA 23834. A private interment will be held at Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery at Amelia at a later time. John adamantly stated that flowers not be sent. He was a proud supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. His family has asked in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to this organization as it was near and dear to his heart. www.support.woundedwarriorproject.org

I don’t even know what to say or write. Many years ago I became a part of the family when Chelle added a plate for me at the Thanksgiving table. I skipped over calling him Mr. Rogala or John and jumped right to referring to him as Dad or Papa – as the grandkids call him. He always had a great smile, wonderful sense of humor and the ability to make you feel like you were right where you belong – whether it be at a birthday party, anniversary party, a “just because” cookout or the Thanksgiving table. It was always evident how much he loved his family and cherished each and every grandkid. I will miss the smiles, the jokes and great conversation. The Thanksgiving table will not be the same, but the memories we share around it will make sure he is there to celebrate many more. Love to you all during this time of grief, Each of you have been in my thoughts and in my hopes you find comfort with each other during this difficult time.
