Obituary

Joyce Oliver, of North Chesterfield, Virginia, entered into eternal rest and went to be with her Savior on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the age of 99.

Joyce was born on August 2, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late James and Naomi Dunlap. She was the fifth of twelve children and was blessed with a large and loving family.

Joyce dedicated more than 48 years of service to Sony Pictures Entertainment before retiring. Joyce was also a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and served as a volunteer nurse for 10 years at the Concord Baptist Church Nursing Home, Inc. in Brooklyn, New York. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and faithfully served Him throughout her life. While living in New York, she was a devoted member of Concord Baptist Church.

After relocating to Chesterfield, Virginia, Joyce joined Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, where she worshipped faithfully and remained an active member until her health began to decline. There, she was a member of the Living Life Together Small Group. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, an organization that emphasizes friendship, sisterhood, and the joy of having fun.

Joyce enjoyed crocheting, spending time with family and friends, and socializing with those she loved. She especially enjoyed dining out and sharing laughter and fellowship with others. She loved singing with the Senior Choir at Concord Baptist Church for 15 years and loved participating in the Christmas Cantatas and attending church concerts. Known for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering faith, Joyce touched the lives of many and will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, and enduring love for her family.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 45 years, David Oliver; her son, Tyrone Dunlap; her sisters, Minnie, Alma, and Doris; and her brothers, Howard, Edward, Ralph, Clarence, Gardner, and George.

Joyce leaves to cherish her precious memory her three children, Joan Dunlap, Jerome Williams (Ellen), and Marzetta McGuffin; four grandchildren, Angela Pulliam-Jones, Tonya L. Pulliam, Rochelle Peters (Ortiz), and Marcine Woodley; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan, Devin, Ava, Christie, Michele, Pracesha, Tra’Dente, and Chyna; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Taylor and Brenda Rose; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.

She also leaves behind four cherished friends, Beverly Crenshaw, Terri Crenshaw, Mary Harrell, and Janet Scott, whose friendship brought her much joy throughout the years.

Although Joyce’s physical presence will be deeply missed, her legacy of faith, love, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
