Obituary

Mark Edward Sweatt, 51, of Midlothian, VA went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 18, 2023. He was born on August 13, 1971, in Covington, VA to Brenda Kay Rhoten and the late Jack Edward Sweatt. Mark is also preceded in death by his father, Larry Augustus Rhoten; sister, Wendy Sweat; and brother, Jack Sweatt.

Mark lived in Chesterfield, VA most of his life where he established many lifelong friends and was surrounded by many family members. Mark loved spending time with family, friends, and distant relatives at the Sweatt family reunions.

Mark was a talented painter for over 30 years. One time he was challenged to paint with his eyes closed and he cut in a straight line perfectly.  Mark would adopt the nick-name “Spider” because of the way he would climb ladders to get on top of the roof and getting into small spaces.

Mark was very adventurous and enjoyed the outdoors.  He loved to fish and collect artifacts such as arrow heads and old bottles. Mark liked his history and enjoyed going to historical parks and reading books.

Mark had an amazing heart, was kind to others, and loved to make you laugh. He experienced many hardships throughout his life. Some from his childhood and some self-afflicted, however, it never changed his character of how he treated others.

Those who knew Mark, saw him suffer with substance abuse for many years. In 2018, Mark began to overcome his addiction and was baptized on January 5, 2019.  He began to build a relationship with Jesus and liked singing worship songs.

This world was clearly not so kind but, he is now finally at peace with no worries or pain.

Mark is survived by his daughter, Ashlei Selden (Matt); son, Cory Irving; mother, Brenda Kay Rhoten; step-mother, Lorrine Jordan; sisters, Lisa Ann Janosik (Bill), Kimberly Rhoten, Tavia Dowden (Matt); brother, Adam Rhoten, and among other brothers and sisters; nieces, Jacklyn Weeks (Chris), Sarah Dinsmore (Scott), Alissa Seay (Jonathan), Adrianna Rhoten (Jason); nephews, Matt Janosik, Daniel Janosik, Markell Pittman, Denver Dowden, Brantley Dowden, Michael Turturro, Nicholas Turturro; great-nieces, Kynslee Chavis, Alyanna Hicks (Nick), Telayna Hicks; great-nephews, Elijah Hicks, Austin Dinsmore, Brantley Dinsmore, Carter Dinsmore, and Joseph Turturo.

My sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to Mark’s family. Your son, brother and dad was truly a dude with a super big heart. Through all his trials and troubles Mark kept his integrity. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Mark was one of the best painters in Richmond. I have many “Spider” stories. Nobody could caulk like Mark. On million dollar house, Mark was who you wanted on the front entryway.
    Rest Easy Little Brother.

  2. My sincere condolences to the entire family. I have so many funny stories involving Mark ..he must have taken me to every abandoned house in Virginia looking for bottles and other relics. I kept poison ivy the entire 5 + years we were together thanks to our adventures to any and all fishing holes, and places he could relic hunt with my dads detector .We had rented a small jon boat and I was laying across the bench seat tanning and I could tell we were just going in small circles so I said Mark what are you doing ??!! I sat up and he was leaning over the side of the boat as far as he could reach trying to pluck a lily pad flower for me but just couldn’t get the boat close enough..he finally got it .. my point being Mark could be sweet and romantic when he wanted to ..even if sometimes he tried to make everyone think he was this tough guy ..I have always been thankful for meeting him and dating him because we created the most prized thing to us both …our daughter Ashlei .. I was so happy to learn Mark had been baptized and had prayed and prayed for him over the years that he would find God and get it together. Although as humans we grieve for him being gone ,there is a part of me that is happy for him … how great is it that he gets to kneel before God in his kingdom of heaven?!!! There is no pain , no addiction , no suffering anymore ..only the purest of love…I hope everyone can rest easy in knowing that Mark is now with all his family and friends that went before him and has left all his worldly troubles behind ..I will be praying for strength and healing for the entire family.
    God Bless you all!! ♡
