Obituary

Celebrating the life of Marshall L Bell, Sr.
I am not eternal, but a man; a part of the whole. As the hour is a part of the day, I will come on as the hour and like an hour I will pass away.
-Epictetus, Discourses
Marshall L. Bell of North Chesterfield, VA dropped all working tools of life and was called from labor to refreshment on November 10, 2017. He was preceded in death by his son Marshall Jr., granddaughter Tisha Ford, sisters Ophelia Bell Johnson and Vivian Bell Banks, and beloved wife, the late Daris Gwinette Bell. He was the second of three born to the late Royal Bell and Martha Bell. Marshall accepted Christ at an early age and attended Virginia public school system. He and his family survived the social and financial challenges of the time with perseverance, dignity, and an abiding faith in God.
As a child, he always had a vision and quest for life that was exciting, engaging, and difficult to be denied. After graduating from high school and with encouragement from his buddy and best friend, he relocated to Huntington, NY where education and employment opportunity was more accessible. He was employed by the Veteran Administration, Northport, New York.
During the Korean War conflict, he was found worthy to serve his country and was drafted into the US military in which he served with distinguished honor until his honorable discharge. Shortly thereafter, he returned to New York and previous employer.
He met and married his wife Margaret Shell, a native of South Carolina. From this union they were blessed with four wonderful children; Marshall Jr., Marguerite, Myron, and Margaret (Peggy). Sadly the marriage ended with the death of his wife and mother of his four children.
In addition to his own children, he also played a fatherly role in helping to shape the lives of other children, namely; Laura Lenear Dorsey Harris of Kissimmee, FL, Pamela Alexander Mingo, Rochester, NY, Joyce Burwell, Dorine Alexander Taylor, and Allen Alexander Jr. of Ocala, FL.
Inequality was unacceptable for Marshall and excellence was always sought in any pursuit including his career. He continued his educational desires by attending the New York Institute of Technology, Farmingdale, NY receiving degrees in nursing and mortuary sciences. He also attended State University of NY where he received his BS degree in community mental health. His educational accomplishments opened new career opportunities and life experiences for him.
He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church, Amityville, NY, serving in many of the church offices. He was a member of Wyandanch/Amityville Kiwanis Club, Prince Hall Mason and member of Hollywood Lodge # 92. He was elected Worshipful Master of his Lodge and appointed Special District Deputy Grand Master for the State of New York and its jurisdictions.
After thirty two years of employment and community services, Marshall remarried, retired, and relocated to North Chesterfield, VA and continued with his wife their passion for worldwide traveling by land, air, and sea. He also found great pleasure in golfing, reading, photography, and playing his music instruments.
Left to honor his memory are his five children, Marguerite Bell Ford of Baltimore, MD., Myron Bell of New York, and Margaret Bell of North Chesterfield, VA, Weston Taylor of North Chesterfield, VA, and Lynore Young (Nathaniel Young) of Wilmington, NC. Grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ashleigh Bell, Brionna Jones, Sherina Gerringer, Sharise Jenkins, Brielle Moon, Ashton Bell, Jasmine Young, Janae Young, Isaiah Kilpatrick, Deonte Bryant, Troy Jackson. Niece Gwendolyn Holt of Powhatan, VA. Nephews: William, Brian, Eric, and Kerry Banks of Richmond, VA, and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

  1. Marshall was such a wonderful neighbor and friend. We would sometimes spend hours in his or mine driveway talking about life and world issues. He loved children and watched mine grow from birth until his final days. He would attend their school activities and treated them as if they was his own and they loved him for it. I will greatly miss our times together and his contagious smile and laughter. Farewell dear fried, rest in peace, thanks for making the world a better place…we loved you, but god loved you best.

  2. Words can,t express how heavy my Heart is right now. Heaven has gotten an Angel, Rest in Paradise Dad you will be greatly missed but your memory lives on in my Heart. Sincerely,
    Pamela Alexander
