Obituary

Mary Little, age 74 died March 18, 2021 surrounded by her family and friends at the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospice House in Richmond, Va. She endured a prolonged illness after breaking her hip 6 months earlier. She was deeply loved, and her life affected everyone she met.

A celebration of Mary”™s life will be held on August 4th, 2021 which would have been her 75th birthday.

Mary was a remarkable person. Life threw her several serious and heart shattering challenges that would have seemed impossible to most people. Yet, Mary persisted with grace and independence throughout her life. Determination was Mary”™s life theme until the very end. She was funny, loyal, generous, and dependable.

Mary deeply loved her family and friends, and cats. She would frequently say wise and profound things with her dry wit, which kept friends and family all laughing together. She regularly enjoyed afternoons with her sister Lesa, getting manicures, pedicures, and haircuts. Mary loved music and going to the movies It was fun to go with her because her laugh was contagious! An enjoyable afternoon for Mary was watching classic movies and shows like the Golden Girls on TV – especially with snacks!

In her late 30″™s she attended Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center and graduated with a certificate in food service, working until she was 71. Into her late 50″™s she rode her bike to work and back every day. She was punctual, and never missed a day. Work brought Mary joy and purpose, which is how she approached most things. She spent 14 years at Shoney”™s, 5 years at Wendy”™s, and then 12 years working at Goodwill, reluctantly retiring just 3 years ago.

Mary was an artist and loved to scrapbook, even before it was a big thing. Trendsetter? She had gorgeous handwriting and would spend hours upon hours writing the bible, the whole bible, three times.

Mary lived with her sister Lesa in Chesterfield Va. for 26 years, and then joined the Chesterfield County Mental Health Community. For the last seven years, Mary lived in Newby”™s Bridge Group Home and developed loving relationships with her roommates and caregivers. It was her adopted family, and she was very happy and content there.

    Nature’s first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf’s a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay.

    Lesa and family,

I am so sorry to hear about Mary’s passing. As always I know Mary put up a good fight and never gave up until God told her it was time to rest. Even then she probably had a smart remark! I want to attend the celebration of her life on her birthday in August so please keep in touch with the details. You are all in my thoughts and I am sending love and strength your way.

  4. To my dear friend, Lesa, and her sister Sarah, there will be a hole in your heart left by sweet Mary. That hole will be filled with all the wonderful memories that were made with your sister and will last a lifetime. I knew all you girls growing up and now one of us has been chosen for another path. We will all meet together again where there is no pain and only beauty and goodness will surround us as it now surrounds dear Mary. Isn’t that the greatest blessing. We love you and will be praying for your healing during this difficult time. I am so thankful that God helped our lives to entwine and showed us the path to friendship.

My sweet Sister I miss you & love you with all my heart. It’s Spring, & I wish you were here to enjoy every flower, bird, & new life. Just one more time I would love to see the County Van roll into my driveway with a visit from YOU❣
I’m sorry you suffered from the awful seizures, & I did my best to watch over your care. I hope you’re at peace in the next place, & you’re with all the people we love who’ve gone before you. Thank you for trying so hard to get back up & pushing forward to get home. I know you tried your best. And I’m so grateful for that time with you every day. Watch over me & our family sweetheart. Until I see you again, know that you’re thought of, & missed everyday. I love you ❤
