Obituary

Mary Louise Coleman, 92 of Chesterfield, VA affectionately known as “Mamaw” went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 16, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Penny, Sr. and Maude Walker Penny, 3 brothers, late husband of 71 years, Hugh Jett Coleman, and oldest son Dennis Wayne Coleman, Sr. She is survived by her youngest son, Gary Coleman (Sherry), Daughter-in-Law Debbie Coleman (Dennis), two grandchildren, Dennis Wayne Coleman, Jr (Jenna) and Christina Clark (Barry) and six great grandchildren, Hailie and Lance Coleman, Holly Lynn, Parker, Juliana and Tucker Clark. Mary graduated from Thomas Dale High School and continued her education with Smith and Madden Business College and graduated as an Executive Secretary.  Mary loved her secretarial career and worked for Defense General Supply Center, Reynolds Metals South Plant and finally retired from James McGraw in 1985. After her retirement Mary joined the volunteer group at Chippenham Hospital in 1986 and served for 32 years covering the front reception desk, helping in the volunteer office and loved working in the Gift Shop.  In 2015 she was inducted into the Chesterfield County Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame for her outstanding Service to Chesterfield County.  During her 32 years of volunteering at Chippenham Hospital, she volunteered 18,642 hours and is still to this day the 2nd highest ranked Volunteer in the program.  Mary loved and cherished her time with family and helping others.  Her warm heart and love of helping people will be greatly missed. In her other spare time, she knitted hundreds of sweaters, gloves and hats for Knit for Kids sponsored by Guidepost magazine and sewed pillowcase dresses for a church for little girls around the world. The family would like to say a special thank you to Joyce Taylor and the staff at Heritage Hall Rehab Center in Blackstone for the care she received during her rehab and to the Amedisys Home Health staff and nurses and hospice nurse Terry B, hospice on call nurse Vic and hospice Chaplin Chris with Amedisys Hospice and special caregiver Sharon Weeks and her little dog Mr. Pickles. The love and care you showed to Mary will always be treasured.  The family will receive friends and family from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Road.  Her graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 2901 W. Hundred Road, Chester, VA  23831. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity (Powhatan), 1922 Urbine Road, Powhatan, VA  23139.
