Obituary

Matthew Justin McCord, 50, of Chesterfield, VA transitioned into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, February 12, 2026 after a yearlong battle with a Glioblastoma brain tumor. He was born on December 10, 1975 in Richmond, Virginia to Barbara Crumpler McCord and the late Frank Reed McCord.

Matthew is survived by his mother, Barbara Crumpler McCord; brothers, Stephen Eric McCord and Samuel Reed McCord; sister, Kimberley McCord Rooney and her husband Kevin Rooney; nephew and niece; Stephen Olson and Stephanie Bray; nephews, Jacob Reed McCord and Joshua Samuel McCord; nephew and niece, Logan Reed Rooney and Emily Grace Rooney; and his beloved fur-babies, Dexter and Gus.

Matt was known for his intelligence and quiet and quirky nature.  Graduating with a Computer Science degree from Radford University he embarked on a long career putting his education and learned coding languages to work.  He was always inventing and self-educating himself in coding, 3D imagery, and then in circuitry.

Later he decided to venture across country to Arizona where he would live for a few years, becoming a homeowner enjoying the hot arid terrain.  He then moved back to Virginia with his two adopted fur babies, Gus and Dexter, in tow.

He was loved by his friends and co-workers and always looked forward to the annual trip canoeing down the James River.  He also enjoyed his fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay.

He was a wonderful uncle and enjoyed his time with his nephews and nieces.  He was loved by his father, mother, brothers, and sister who stayed by his side until his very last breath.

He will be missed and was gone too soon.  Until we meet again Matt.

There’s no one else I’d rather play chess with.

You always saw the board differently—quiet, patient, five moves deep in a world all your own. You lived that way too. Not loud. Not for show. Just true to yourself.

Ours was a friendship of knowing. What I’ll miss most is what we didn’t have to say—the unspoken understanding, the connection in the silence between moves with the occasional grin.

We used to say checkmate doesn’t mean it’s over. We always reset the pieces. We always begin again. I’m holding onto that.

Until we sit across from each other again—thanks for playing the game, bro. Maybe next time you’ll let me be white and go first.

Matt was a good friend. I particularly enjoyed his stories of ingenuity while we hung out at Joey’s hotdogs. He just seemed to have a solution for everything and a story for everything. I’m glad we were able to work on projects together, as he always had a different way of looking at things. I knew he was deep into flight simulation and was building a rig. By chance I found a genuine military airplane seat at salvage/antique yard and he passed on it – he was building his own – of course. Another time we met up and he was looking for a bowling ball. I asked if he was joining a league, but no. He needed it as a base to build his joystick. He was always up to something, and I could tell he absolutely enjoyed the challenges. We once left work late and his truck had a dead battery. Believe it or not, he bummed a dime off a lady as she also left the building as neither of us had any change. But, that dime is all he needed to fix his truck. Such a down to earth guy, and I will surely miss him.
