Obituary

Maurice Orlando Beck, a native of Chesterfield County passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday March 2, 2020.  Mr. Beck is survived by his wife of 65 years Katherine Beale Latimer, his brother Russow Rudolph Beck Jr, his four children: Maurice O. Beck Jr, (Victoria), Michel L. Beck (Lisa), Mark L. Beck, Mary K. Beck-Butler (Jeff).  He is also survived by his eight grandchildren; Branden, Meredith, Anne Harrison, Natalie, Holly, Ashley, Jordan, and Jennifer, as well as his four great-grandchildren; Sawyer, Owen, James, and Corbyn. Maurice is preceded in death by his parents, Russow Rudolph Beck and Annie Mae Goodwyn Beck, and his brother, James G. Beck.  Maurice attended Benedictine where he played football and from there, he completed his education at what was then known as Ferrum Farm School. Maurice dutifully served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee from 1953-1957 enlisted at the end of World War II with active duty in Japan during the Korean War Conflict.  Following his service and upon returning home in 1957 he operated N.B. Goodwyn & Sons Lumber Company where he later assumed ownership as President with his brothers Russ and James Beck.  He graduated from Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, VA in May 1958 with a degree in business and accounting. “The Mill” as it was known to locals, became a center point for the building community and made significant contributions to the county’s growth and development. Mr. Beck was a volunteer for Bensley Bermuda rescue squad and provided leadership in several youth sports leagues including Chalkley Association, a founding member of Gordon Athletic Association and was on the board of CBC otherwise known as the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs. He involved himself in the Clover Hill Masonic Lodge #253.  He was Initiated July 30, 1974. He was Passed on September 10, 1974 and he was Raised October 8, 1974. He was a member of American Legion Post 186 in Midlothian, VA.  In 1985 Maurice managed the American Legion Post 186 baseball team, where he led them to their victory at the 1985 American Legion World Series. Maurice was a man of many passions; he was an avid bird hunter and was active in field trials for over 20 years.  He was a member of the VA Deer Hunters Association and a lifelong member of Oakland Hunt Club where he served as Hunt Master, Story Telling Chairman and Farming Grounds Consultant. He enjoyed a good deer hunt with his life-long friend Louis Farmer.  He loved rebuilding engines and working on the lumber yard with his treasured friend, Raymond Lee.  He enjoyed the work of a well-trained bird dog but of all of his loves, it was his wife Katherine and the family they built together he treasured the most. Whenever Kitty Beale walked into a room, a smile would sneak onto his face, showing the world that even over half a century, she was and always will be the love of his life. He had a mind for math, mechanical operations and enjoyed large equipment and land excavation.  He started M & M Excavating with his son Mike Beck who leads the company today. The family will receive visitors at Morrissett Funeral Home located at 6500 Iron Bridge Road on Thursday March 5th 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM, a Masonic Service will take place at 6PM.  Funeral Services will be held 11AM on March 6th at Second Branch Baptist Church located at 12217 Second Branch Road in Chesterfield. Dear Beck family, I’m saddened to hear of Maurice’s death. I have so many fond memories of working at the lumber company for over 20 years. We didn’t always see eye to eye but we always laughed afterwards. Maury, Mike, and Mark….thinking of you and sending you all deepest condolences. May God wrap you in his arms and give his peace.
    Sincerely,
    Mary Tucker
