Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Melvin Northington, who left us peacefully on March 15, 2025 at the age of 69.  He was a devoted father, a cherished friend, and a source of strength and kindness to all who knew him.

Born on 1/5/1956 in Pittsburgh, PA, Mel grew up with a curious mind and a compassionate heart. Throughout his life, he was known for his unwavering love for his family, his strong work ethic, and his ability to bring laughter to any room.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell Northington Jr and Ida Belle Northington; sisters, Catherine Northington and Sarah Montgomery (James); and brother Thomas Northington.

He is survived by his children, Melvin Mitchell Northington, Victoria Marie Northington, and Jordan Alexander Taylor Northington; his grandson Noah Alexander Young; his sisters Dorothy Hollie (Eddie), Wanda King (André), and a brother William Northington; He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.  They will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. He was a guiding light in their lives, always offering wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. His legacy lives on through the values he instilled and the countless lives he touched.

Mel found joy in life’s simple pleasures—spending time with his loved ones, sharing stories, and finding beauty in the everyday moments. His kindness, generosity, and warmth will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025 at Morrissett Funeral Home at 3:30 pm with a viewing at 2:30 pm. The address is 6500 Iron Bridge Road, North Chesterfield, VA 23234.  Family and friends are invited to join us in honoring his memory and sharing stories of the wonderful man he was.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kidney Foundation in his honor.

My husband and I are saddened to hear of Mel’s passing – Mel and I actually started our journey at the Fed on the same day back in late 2002, and he could definitely bring a smile and laughter to all wherever he went. You are in our prayers –
