Obituary
Michael L. Lusk, 59, of North Chesterfield, went home to be with his Lord on Friday December 20, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Better known as “Music Michael Flowin’ Rivers” or just “Mike Rivers” to his radio listeners in the Richmond area for the last 30 years. Mike was the youngest son of Buck and Eloise Lusk who predeceased him. He is survived by his brothers, Jerry Lusk and Gene Lusk and his wife Rae; his niece Kara Lusk; nephews, Brooks Lusk and his wife Jennifer and their two children and Ross Lusk and wife, Keri. Mike was born in Richmond in December 1954, attended George Wythe High School and graduated from King High School in Tampa, FL in 1973. Mike attended the University of South Florida before beginning his radio career at WPLA, Plant City, FL. After a few years working in Florida radio markets, Mike enlisted in the US Navy in 1978, proudly serving aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower for four years during which time he saw the world and operated the ship’s radio station. After his honorable discharge, Mike returned to Richmond and in 1983 worked on the top rated Q Morning Zoo on WRVQ doing character voices including “Parker Field” and “Radar Dodge”. Mike continued to work in radio stations in Richmond including 96.5 WKLR where he did his last on-air show in April. Mike was a big supporter of the US space program and saw a shuttle launch in person. Mike enjoyed making candles and gave away all he made to friends and acquaintances. Mike loved the game of baseball beginning with the amazing Mets of 1969. Mike was a big supporter of the Richmond Flying Squirrels and spent many a game at The Diamond loudly expressing his support for the team. Declining health eventually prevented Mike from attending games in person but he continued to follow the team on radio until the final out of this season. Mike also loved all animals and had a special affection for cats, especially “Buddy the Cat”, his last companion who he rescued from certain death. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of McGuire VA Hospital, his personal physician Dr. Peter Smithson, and the staff and nurses of Hospice of Virginia for the care they rendered to Mike during his final battle with cancer. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 27, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rte. 10). At Mike’s request, they ask that you please share your stories and memories with them. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the animal care charity of your choice.
