Obituary
Norwood H. Powell, Jr. passed away October 24, 2023. He was born September 20, 1953 to Norwood Powell, Sr. and Frances Hyler Powell.
He grew up in Chesterfield County, Virginia, but after graduating from Washington and Lee University in 1976, he worked as a geologist and traveled the country. After working as a geologist, he began his career as an Earth Science teacher in Dinwiddie County. In 1981, Norwood started working at Lloyd C. Bird High School, where he spent the remainder of his 30-year career. He was affectionately known as the “fossil” of the high school. Teaching was his passion, and in his career he shaped the lives of many of the students in his classroom. Norwood met his wife in 1981, and they were married in 1983. During their marriage, they welcomed two children.
He had a deep love of animals, such a love that he acquired many animals of many different species and often joked that his home was a farm.
He never met a stranger and was a very devoted friend. If there was ever someone in need of something, he would be the first person to help.
Norwood is preceded in death by his son Stephen Powell, and his father Norwood Powell. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Anne Powell; daughter Lyssa Fisher; son-in-law Zachary Fisher; two grandchildren, Addilyn Fisher and Jaxon Fisher; mother Francis Powell; brothers Tom (Sue) and Mitch (Roberta) Powell; numerous nieces and nephews; and finally, his dear friend Juan Perez, who helped him in more ways than we can begin to describe.
While Norwood’s life in his later years was one of deep sadness after the loss of his son, his family hopes that everyone will remember him as the fun, creative, and eccentric man that he was.
Services will be held at a later date.

So sorry to hear of Norwood’s passing. He was a dear, fun, funny and great member of our Science faculty. We all were so close and had many fun times. Even though I haven’t seen Norwood in recent years, I do send my love to the family. Josie L. Cuffe (Biology teacher who retired 27 years ago.)

You’ll be missed, Norwood. I enjoyed the years we taught together at LC Bird so much. I still have the poster of the moon landing that you gave to me when you retired above my classroom desk. It always reminds me of you.
