Obituary

Alice Cannon Carter (Patsy), of Chester, Va, stepped into the presence of her Heavenly Father on Friday, July 25, 2025, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.   She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Allan Carter; her father, Robert William Cannon; her mother, Annie Morris Cannon; brothers, Morris Cannon and Clyde Cannon; and sisters, Margaret Dilio and Julia Ann Snead.

She will be greatly missed by her son, Kevin Edward Carter and his wife Ethel.  She will also be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Allison Mayorga (Misael), Joshua Carter (Emily), Daniel Carter, Noah Carter, Anna Carter, and Gabrielle Carter; her new great grandchild, Lukas Mayorga-Carter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Patsy was born on March 19, 1941, in La Crosse, Virginia.  She met Allan in her late teens and married on April 2, 1961.  After Allan’s service in the Marines, they settled in the area of South Hill, VA where they raised their only child, Kevin. Many years later, Allan’s job took him to various cities in North Carolina until retirement brought them to Blackstone, VA.

Patsy always had the desire to try new things in her career.  She was a business manager in a doctor’s office, insurance agent, real estate agent, manager of a beach resort, and ended her career as a Clinic Manager for First Health of the Carolinas.  While she loved working and challenging herself, her first love was her family.   She was a strong supporter for her son as he grew and became the “fun” grandma who took her 6 grandchildren on many “grandma adventures”.

Patsy loved the outdoors.  You would find her either walking her 2 miles or out in the yard, landscaping.   Twice in her life she had to put things on hold as she battled cancer.  She fought this disease fiercely, defying all odds, becoming and remaining cancer free.

Later in her life the ruthless disease, Alzheimer’s, slowly took over her mind.  It was during this time that her Lord became more and more precious to her as she spent time in His house on Sunday mornings or listened to gospel music that calmed her spirit in the quiet of her home.  While she will be greatly missed, we rejoice that her mind and body are whole again, dancing the shag with her sweetheart!

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Immanuel Baptist Church, located at 3601 Monument Avenue, Richmond, VA  23230.  Join the family for visitation at 10:00am in the sanctuary followed by the celebration of life service at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Alice Carter to Crater Community Hospice online at https://cratercommunityhospice.org/ or by mail to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA  23805.   The family is forever grateful for their loving care!
