Obituary
Raleigh “Red” Carr, 83, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026. Born on October 24, 1942, in Brookneal, Virginia, Raleigh was the son of the late Charlie and Reva Carr. He was also predeceased by his siblings W.T. Carr, Ferrell Carr, and Shirley Carr Scott.
Raleigh attended William Campbell School and built a life defined by hard work and community involvement. For many years, he owned and operated Carr’s Gas and Budget Truck Rental (formerly Carr’s Texaco), becoming a trusted and familiar presence in the southside Richmond area. His dedication to his community extended beyond his business as the President of the Broad Rock Merchants Association and an active participant in Richmond’s Eighth District events. Raleigh played a key role in National Night Out celebrations and holiday celebrations around Thanksgiving and Christmas. His efforts were deeply appreciated by those around him.
Known for his wit and unfiltered honesty, Raleigh had a unique ability to bring laughter to any situation. His straightforward nature and sense of humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Raleigh is survived by his beloved wife of over 63 years, Jean Carr; his daughters Gina Carr Barrett (Marshall) and Renee Carr Newman (Tommy): his cherished grandchildren Lindsey and Kyle Newman; and his brothers Jack Carr (Sandra) and Bobby Carr. He is also survived by a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many customers that he called family.
Raleigh was a plain man that wore the same work clothes every day and requested that he be buried in them. If you are able to attend his service, he would want you to wear what you wish.
Raleigh’s legacy is one of dedication – to his family, his community, and the values he held dear. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Ms Jean and your daughters I am so sorry 😢 for the loss of Mr Red as I always called him I so appreciate the opportunity I had to sit down with Mr Red and your self to hear the stories he shared about growing up as a young man whenever I rented a Budget Truck he would explain on my do’s and don’ts while driving with a somewhat sternest in his voice especially about locking the Keys inside the Truck.Which I appreciated the extra details he was giving me I thought 💭 this was kind caring and thoughtful Mr Red will forever be in my Heart 💔🕊️🌹🙏🏾Rest in Hardworking Paradise I will truly miss you on this side Mr Red you always said what’s going on Trouble that was your nickname for me God blessed you with an amazing Family Friends and Devoted Customers 💔🕊️🌹🙏🏾 you’re Trouble
