Obituary
Richard “Sonny” Grey Carter III, of Chesterfield, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 5, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 22, 1952, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Richard Grey Carter Jr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Wilcox) Carter.
Sonny is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Ann Carter; his sons, Richard “Ricky” Grey Carter IV (Maegan) and Christopher William Carter (Nicole); and his five cherished grandchildren, Richard “Grey” Carter V, Avery Jane Carter, Keena Elizabeth Carter, Kaelynn Judith Carter, and Keltie Annmarie Carter.
Sonny was a man of many talents. His skills and resourcefulness knew no bounds—whether it was making repairs or tackling any mechanical challenge, he was always the go-to problem-solver. He proudly served the U.S. government for many years, and his dedication to service extended into his personal life.
Sonny became a Master Mason of the Caribbean Naval Lodge in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 1987 and he later earned the title of 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite in Norfolk, VA, in 1989. His pride in being a Mason was only surpassed by the strong bonds of brotherhood he formed through it.
An avid fisherman, he enjoyed countless hours on the water, but it was on the baseball field where his heart truly soared. Sonny spent years coaching his sons and many others at Plaza Little League in Virginia Beach, a role that brought him immense joy. His love for the game was evident in his tireless efforts to maintain the fields and his many volunteer hours serving on the Board of Directors. He poured his heart into coaching, not only teaching kids how to play, but showing them the value of teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship.
In 1975, Sonny met Kathy, the love of his life. They married in 1980 and built a life together, raising two sons. Kathy was his steadfast partner and together, they shared 45 years of love, laughter, and loyalty. Sonny was a remarkable father and “G-Pa” and leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication to his family and friends that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. The family is grateful for the many years they had with him and will carry his memory with them always, and extends heartfelt appreciation to the devoted staff of VCU Oncology, DaVita James River, and Affinity Care of Virginia for their care and compassion.
