Obituary

Roy Lee Hendrick, 71, passed away peacefully in Amelia, Virginia on August 3rd, 2024. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a friend to many. He was born on December 25, 1952, in Richmond, Virginia, to Raymond Douglas Hendrick and Mary Phyllis Hendrick.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Joetta Hendrick, his devoted wife of 15 years; three sons Chuck (Lisa), Jason (Jackie), Brandon (Katie) and daughter Melissa (fiancé Chris); stepchildren Kyle Ingraham (Lindsay), Jake Ingraham, and Emily Ingraham; two brothers Raymond Hendrick Jr (Marilyn), Ronnie Henrick (Sherrill) and half sister Lindsey Clapper (Jeremiah). Roy also cherished every moment with his ten grandchildren.

He was a very talented and beloved racer in the Late Model stock Car division, driving the infamous Flying 11, which graced the side of his car in honor of his father Ray. He won many races and championships at Southside Speedway (VA), South Boston Speedway (VA), and Orange County Speedway (NC). In fact, in 1983 he won the titles at all three races that year, a record that still stands to this day. He also finished second place in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Division in 1990 and 1991, driving for car owner Jim Irby. Roy started his racing career in 1969 at South Boston Speedway and won his last race there in 1991. He was also a dominant force at Southside Speedway, winning many championships at the track. His best year at Southside Speedway came in 1991 when he won an incredible 24 out of 27 races.

When Roy retired from racing, he stayed involved in the sport, attending many track and historic car events with a replica of his father’s Flying 11 Modified Coupe. He was also a business owner, and opened the Muffler Shop in 1980 and Roy Hendrick’s Muffler and Automotive in 2003.

Roy was a very caring and passionate man who loved visiting and chatting with his and his dad’s many fans, and like his dad he had a legion of fans and friends alike. Roy’s legacy will continue to live on and be celebrated for many years to come.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday August 24th at Rassawek Vineyards 6276 River Road West, Columbia, VA 23038. If you have a vintage car, please feel free to drive it to the event.
