Obituary

Ruth Smith Sprouse Hawkins, 89, departed this life at St. Francis Hospital from the effects of pneumonia on Friday, November 24, 2017. She was born in Garland, NC and moved to Richmond in 1945, where she was employed at Western Union and the Division of Motor Vehicles. Mrs. Hawkins was an accomplished businesswoman, civic leader, and churchwoman. She attended Richmond Professional Institute (VCU). Mrs. Hawkins was the owner of Ruth Sprouse Associates, an interior design business, for over 40 years. She worked for the Life of Virginia Insurance Co. and was co-founder of the Monty Hawkins Insurance Adjusting Co. She worked side by side with her husband in that business for over 20 years. Over her lifetime, she served in a variety of civic and community organizations. She was a member of the Chesterfield Republican Women’s Club. She served on the Chesterfield YMCA Board and as a gubernatorial appointee to the Virginia Public Telecommunications Board and the Appomattox River Water Authority. She was a founding member of Southside Baptist Church and was a member of Meadowbrook Country Club for over 50 years. Mrs. Hawkins was the founder and first president of the Manchester and Meadowbrook Country Club Women’s Clubs. She was also a member of the Matoaca Women’s Club. Most recently, she was a resident at the Springdale Retirement Community. She loved dancing, beach music, fishing, and gardening. Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Doshie Smith; husbands, Monty Hawkins and Richard W. Sprouse, Sr.; siblings, Leland Rich, Myrtle Rich Hendrix, Clifton Smith, and John Dewey Smith. Survivors include her brother, Ernest Smith of Garland, NC; children, Constance Sprouse Sorrell (Ray), Richard W. Sprouse, Jr. (Melanie) of Plano, TX, and Pamela Sprouse Thomason (Kirk) of Waynesboro; step-son, Chris Hawkins (Michele); grandchildren, Ian Sprouse of Plano, TX, Clair Thomason Benitez (Antonio) of Austin, TX, and Luke Thomason (Jennifer) of Fairfax, VA; step-grandchildren, Berkeley Hawkins (Danielle) and Lauren Hawkins; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, and beloved friends. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday

    My deepest sympathy to Ruth’s family . She was a wonderful friend to the Matoaca community , and a long time member of the Matoaca Woman’s Club. I last saw her at our September meeting, and she was always happy to be there with us.
