Obituary

Stephen Roscoe Kanode “Big Sexy”, 60, of Midlothian, Virginia, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife on January 20, 2026. He lived a life defined by faith, dedication, laughter, and genuine kindness, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Steve proudly served seven years in the United States Marine Corps achieving the rank of Sergeant. He served during Operation Desert Storm, where he earned the National Defense Medal and the Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait. He also was awarded a Meritorious Mast in recognition of his exemplary performance and dedication. During his service, he worked as an electrician for a five hundred bed field hospital, was a member of the MEDEVAC reaction force, and also served as a perimeter guard, roles that reflected his dependability, courage, and commitment to protecting others.

Following his military service, Steve followed his dream of becoming a truck driver and built an outstanding civilian career working for various trucking companies including being a road driver for the past 26 years at FedEx Freight. He was known for “keeping the highways sexy” and was widely respected for his professionalism and dedication, achieving the remarkable milestone of over 3 million safe driving miles throughout the course of his career.

Above all else, Steve deeply loved his family. His greatest joy was the life he shared with his wife, Lisa, who was not only the love of his life but also his best friend and soulmate. Their bond was one of laughter, partnership, and unwavering devotion. A relationship that was full of love for each other and for God. Steve also cherished the time he got to spend with his children and grandchildren. He especially loved making memories with them at the lake, their pool, or just sitting around a fire enjoying their company. He always held these memories close to his heart.

Outside of work and family, Steve enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors. He loved traveling, relaxing on the beach, and looking for sharks teeth. He especially loved going on cruises with his wife, creating memories filled with joy and adventure. Steve was a dedicated volunteer and lifetime member of VFW Post 2239. He enjoyed competing in the Virginia Truck Driving Competitions, helped with outreach projects for Kingdom Harvest, and volunteered for Mid Cities civic association and Easter Seals. He was passionate about Wreaths Across America and the Virginia Heroes Banner Project.

Charismatic and full of personality, Steve was known for his humor, warmth, and unmistakable presence. He was funny, “sexy”, and a joy to be around, with a smile that could light up any room. Most of all, he was truly a good person- kind, loyal, and deeply loved by all who knew him.

  1. How blessed we all were to have known Steve. What a kindred spirit – always jovial, playful, and positive. I have never seen him get upset or be unkind to anyone. I have never heard say something negative about anyone. His smile was infectious.
I was so blessed Lisa asked me to stand in for her mother during their vow renewal. There have been thousands of people on that ship but to Steve and Lisa, it was only them. You could feel their love wherever they went. Even when they looked at each other, you could feel the love radiating off of them.
The hurt we feel when we lose a loved one is a testimony to the love we shared for if we didn’t love so deeply, we wouldn’t hurt so badly.
Steve left his footprints in the hearts of all who knew him. How blessed we all were to have him in our lives. I hope he knows the positive impact he left and how much he was truly loved. He will be sorely missed but will remain steadfast in the hearts of all who knew him.
