William Robert “Bobby” Ball, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2023. Bobby was the only child born to Bill and Ruth Ball on October 28, 1942 in Milledgeville, Georgia. In 1954, Bobby began his lifelong passion with baseball as part of the first Virginia Little League team to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. He was signed out of high school to play for the Dodgers organization in 1961 by Tommy Lasorda. He played in the minor leagues for 5 years until making the decision to leave baseball behind to raise a family and work for Dupont in Richmond, Va. Ultimately, he worked for Dupont for 35 years, retiring in 2001. Bobby loved the Lord and being in the Word. When asked about his favorite Scripture, it was all of them. He also loved singing in the choir and his favorite hymn was “Victory in Jesus.”

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy; his children, Lori Phelps (Phil) and James Ball (Lynn); his 5 grandchildren: Walter, Shawn, Justin, Madison, and Wade; and one great-granddaughter, Dawson.

It’s been my pleasure to know Bobby since we were in Buckroe Jr. High School. That went he began dating my childhood friend, Judy. He and Judy were strong in their faith those many years ago. I know everyone who knew Bobby feels the tremendous loss. RIP Bobby and God by with your dear family.

  2. Dear, dear, Judy and family, my heart is broken for you. This was so swift, it’s incomprehensible. Gratefully our Father has greeted Bobby instantly. Soon we will be with them and can look forward to an even greater future. I’m sure your son and brother are with him. As with a multitude of others we look forward to see our loved ones. ❤️

  3. I am very sorry to hear of Bobby’s passing and I want to convey my heartfelt condolences to his family members. Bobby and I worked closely together for several years at Dupont and he was just a special and wonderful person to have been closely associated with. He and I became very close friends and he was just a great and dedicated Christian person who always put his family first.I wish his family the very best.
    Sincerely,Jim Smith

  4. Judy, Jimmy and Lori, Sandra and I were saddened to hear of Bobby’s passing and we did not find out until today (Tuesday}. I’m sorry that we were unable to attend Bobby’s memorial.
Bobby was a mentor to many at church as well as DuPont. May the memories of Bobby comfort you during these difficult days. We know where Bobby is today and we will see him again!
