Cynthia Lynn Piazza of Chesterfield, VA passed away October 31, 2018 at the age of 52 after a courageous battle against brain cancer. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1966, the oldest daughter of Joseph and Rose Marie Moore. Cynthia graduated high school from Lake Braddock in Burke, VA in 1984. In 1988 she graduated with a double major in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Delaware, where she was a founding member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.
In 1989, she married her college sweetheart, Michael Piazza, in Lancaster, PA. They were blessed with one child, Matthew.
Cynthia was passionate in everything she did. Professionally, she taught for more than 20 years, with a particular focus on both educating and nurturing the lives of underprivileged students. She spent 14 years as a Title I Math Specialist at Harrowgate Elementary School in Chester, VA. She was honored as the Chesterfield County District Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2010. In 2015, Cynthia united her passions for education and fitness when she joined Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, which gave her the opportunity to teach integration of academics and fitness at Hopewell Elementary Schools.
Outside of the classroom, Cynthia could usually be found running. She was an avid and accomplished marathon runner, having completed 29 full marathons, including Boston, Chicago, New York City, Marine Corps, and 13 Richmond Marathons. Last spring, her Kids Run RVA RAGNAR team raised almost $4,000 for youth running clubs in Richmond.
Cynthia will be lovingly remembered by her whole family, including her husband Michael, son Matthew, parents Joseph and Rose Marie Moore from Wyoming, brother Curtis Moore, and sister Cara Woelk. A host of fellow teachers, runners, and other friends will miss her easy smile, positive attitude, and commitment to self-improvement.
