Obituary

Helen Phillips Perkins, 91, devoted wife, mother and friend to many, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 7, 2019. Helen is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Thomas “Tuck” E. Perkins; sisters, Jane Johnson and Ruth Gilbert, sisters in law, Jean Perkins and Dot Phillips. She was devoted to her children and their spouses, Sharon P. Eshler (Jacob), Diane P. Ruxer, and Thomas “Tucker” E. Perkins, Jr. (Elizabeth); grandchildren Todd J. Eshler (Marilee), Jason W. Eshler (Rodrigo), John S. Eshler (Paige), Matthew D. Ruxer (Ali), Andrew W. Ruxer (Julia), William E. Perkins (Amy), Anna P. Holloway (Ryan), and Ellie P. Johnson (Whit). She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren. Helen put her Christian faith in action at Branch’s Baptist, serving as President of the WMU and Eva Sanders Circle, and founding the Christian Music Day Camp as a summer music camp for children in the Broad Rock Community. She helped establish Falling Creek Baptist Church. She was active in the music program for Branch’s and the community, singing in the choir, performing with a trio, and as a soloist for many weddings, funerals, and church functions. She had many friends and always saw the best in others. A lifelong learner, she loved to travel, to study history, and volunteered with the Chesterfield Historical Society and served as a docent at Magnolia Grange. She was a founder and secretary of Greater Broad Rock Community, a non-profit dedicated to the local community. She was close to her family and enjoyed spending time with them on family trips to Nags Head and Windmill Point, where she loved an afternoon swim, sailing with Tuck, and preparing the best crab cakes imaginable. Friends may visit from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. N. Chesterfield, VA 23234. An additional visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 am with the funeral service starting at 11:30 am on Saturday, January 12 at Branch’s Baptist Church, 3400 Broad Rock Blvd, Richmond, VA 23234. Interment to follow at Branch’s Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Branch’s Baptist Church for the Lottie Moon Mission Offering or to Doctors Without Borders.
