John "Jack" O. Massie, 92, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 25, 2019. He is survived by his daughters, Marianne Slavic, Sue Blackburn and her husband, Todd; sons, John D. Massie and his wife, Alice, James D. Massie; step-sons, Bruce and Bobby Clayton; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Clayton Massie; mother, Endra Ford; father, John Oscar Massie, Sr.; sister, June Ward and great-granddaughter, Sydney Massie. Jack was a WW II veteran, serving in the Navy in the Pacific. He loved working as a telephone installer with various companies before going out on his own as “The Telephone Man”. However, he will be most remembered for his involvement with local racing and his affiliation with NASCAR. From the 1950’s to the 2000’s he worked as an official at the Daytona 500 race and the NASCAR Cup races at Richmond International Raceway. He was a regular fixture on the flag stand at Southside Speedway and South Boston Speedway for many years. He, also, flagged races at Saluda and numerous other tracks in Virginia and North Carolina. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, February 9, 2019 followed by a reception at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service 6500 Iron Bridge Road. Interment will be held at 1:30pm in Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Southside Church of the Nazarene, 6851 Courthouse Rd, Chesterfield, VA 23832.
