We at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service are incredibly grateful for the strong men and women who serve our country as members of our military. This month we are participating in two events to help support and honor those who are currently serving, or who have served, as a member of the armed forces.

At the start of December we continued our holiday tradition of helping collect Stockings for Soldiers, thanks to the generosity of several local churches & groups. These organizations gathered supplies & stockings to provide some holiday treats to soldiers at Fort Lee. This year over 300 filled stockings were assembled, & Morrissett staff then delivered them to the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia.  These stockings will go to our service men and women who are unable to go home for the holidays. Thanks to our wonderful community, our soldiers had some extra warmth and comfort knowing that there are so many people who care about them, and appreciate their service and sacrifice for this country.

If you are a member of a church or organization and would like to be a part of this program next year, please reach out to our Stocking Coordinator at carol@morrissett.com.

On Saturday, December 19, 2020, the staff at Morrissett will help host a local Wreaths Across America event. 4500 heroes are interred at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, and on that day each of them will be honored and remembered. These wreaths were provided through financial donations from generous members of our community and local organizations. During the nationally-coordinated wreath-laying event our staff and other volunteers will lay a wreath at each veteran’s grave. Similar events are also occurring at other Veterans Cemeteries across the county, and we are proud to have the continued opportunity to help sponsor our local event.

Our staff and volunteers will first gather on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Service, located at 6500 Iron Bridge Road. At 10:30 a.m. we will depart our location in procession with the ceremonial wreaths, escorted by motorcycle riders from the Patriot Guard & American Legion. Arrival at the cemetery will be at 11:30 a.m., where will have the assistance of local law enforcement, and the wreath-laying will begin promptly at 12:00 noon.

The cemetery is located at 10300 Pridesville Road in Amelia, Virginia. If you are a motorcyclist and wish to participate in the motorcycle escort ride from Morrissett to the cemetery please arrive at the funeral home at 9:00 a.m. for registration. The VA cemetery has requested that all volunteers wear a mask or face covering, practice social distancing and refrain from gathering in groups of more than 10 people.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting our veterans and their families. You can also visit the Wreaths Across America website for more information.
