Tips to Help Prepare a Child for an Open Casket Funeral

For over 10 years at the start of the holiday season Morrissett has held an annual Service of Remembrance. We do so to honor the families that we served during the previous year and to remember their loved ones. We were unable to hold the gathering in 2020 due to the pandemic, so this year we were especially pleased to once again gather for this special ceremony and share a meal with so many families.

The service is held every year as a gift to those we have served, because our commitment to them does not end once their initial memorial service is over. We also want to offer compassion during what can be an especially challenging time in the grieving process as the holidays draw near. It is an honor to do this for our families and share this time of fellowship and remembrance with them, in the hopes that it will help equip and encourage them as they go into the holidays. Each family also receives an ornament with the name of their loved one written on it.

The annual gathering began with a meal, followed by a video presentation with pictures of each individual that Morrissett has helped lay to rest this year. There was a candle lighting ceremony, the presentation of the personalized ornaments, and we heard a few words of encouragement from our Community Care Director Greg Webber.

Greg reminded us that it is okay if the holidays are different this year. It can be an opportunity to create new traditions as we find our path to healing. Grief is a reminder of how much we loved the person who has died, and we cannot rush the grieving process. It is also okay to feel happy, and it is not a betrayal of their memory. They would want us to be happy and to continue to give and receive happiness. We should feel whatever it is we need to feel, whether it is joy or grief, and not compare our grief experience to that of anyone else. Each person experiences grief in their own way and in their own time.

The final reminder was this:

Please know you are loved. We consider you family.

And during this holiday season, on behalf of everyone in your Morrissett Family,  may blessings & peace fill your heart and ease your hurt.
