Important Update Regarding COVID-19
Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Service is constantly monitoring the rapid changes of COVID-19 (Corona Virus)
We are following instructions by the Governor of Virginia, The CDC, The National Funeral Directors Association, The Virginia Funeral Directors Association and Regulatory Support Services.
The following outlines the Phase 3 procedure in compliance with the Governor’s current order of 50% capacity.
As of May 15, 2020, Governor Northam has begun to allow some businesses and places of worship and or ceremony to operate at 50% occupancy. We are committed to the families we serve and the communities that support them. We ask that families consider that the type of gatherings they hold to be ever mindful of those who attend, and their health and well-being. We also ask that you refrain from hugging or shaking hands and practice safe social distancing.
What this means for services:
As of May 26, 2020, Governor Northam has put an order in place requiring masks to be worn when in public buildings. In order to protect the vulnerable and high-risk members of the community, it is highly recommended that face masks be worn. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide masks for visitors; please utilize your own. Failure to use a mask while in our establishment will be an assumed release of liability.
All Morrissett Staff will be wearing face masks at all times.
We have placed hand sanitizer and polite reminders throughout the building to assist with cleanliness. We have upgraded the air filters on all of our HVAC systems to promote cleaner air exchange. If you are not in attendance and would like to pass condolences or have your name added to the guest book, please call us and we will assist or utilize the online condolences at Morrissett.com.
Once again, we ask you to practice safe social distancing, and to please not attend if you are ill or at high risk.
Families that maybe in need of our services in the coming weeks, please know that we will care for you and your loved ones with the utmost respect and assist you in the options we feel are safe and that comply with the Governor of Virginia’s limitations and the CDC.
This can mean public or private family services. We promise to work with you as families and your comfort level and desires to honor your loved one.
Please be aware that no coffee, cookies, or cups of water will be available to any guest or families. We will have bottled water available at your request.
As we monitor this ever rapidly changing situation, we will continue to provide updates in regard to the measures we are taking. I remember Melvin from the time he graded my lot and dug my basement for my house in 1962. I was so impressed that I used him again in 1965 when he graded my dad’s building lot. His reliability and sense of humor were two of his biggest strengths. He will be missed. My condolences to his family. Milton Hess

I am sorry to hear about your Dad. Wow I first meet him in 1982 and he and your Mom were the sweetest couple. He always made me laugh and full of life. Our thought and prayers are with you and your family.

Melvin Guthrie was my Pal, my first (& best) Father- in –Law & I’m honored to say…my Friend! I met Melvin in 1978 & it’s been smiles since then! He may have talked about me to you. You would have not known who he was talking about! That’s because from the beginning for some reason, Melvin referred to me as “That Boy”. Even up to last year when we spoke last..I was still “That Boy”.
I’d like to share two & a half stories with you. You’ll see what I mean on a half story. I’ll condense as much as possible!
Story One: When I was courting Linda, she bravely took me home to meet her family. Things were going great, I thought! Melvin motioned for me to go with him. We went from the back door to the garage. Melvin told me I wanted a drink. Imagine that! He proceeded to pull out a semi- clean mason jar. This was 1978 and a long time before a dirty mason jar was fashionable on NCIS with Gibbs. He poured a healthy shot of Jim Beam. I played along & took the shot. Before I could tell him I wasn’t a Beam person, the glass was refilled. This went on a bit. By the time we left the garage I needed my sunglasses. I was intoxicated! Now the fun..go back in the house with everyone (& Mary) drunk. This continued to be our ritual every time we visited. I gave Melvin the Beam he wanted!
Story Two: Christmas 1978, another visit to see Melvin & Mary. Melvin & everyone wanted to cut down a fresh Christmas tree. I was told it was just out the back of the house where the trees were. So here we go! Melvin and I went to the garage for an axe and a hand saw. Any idea what else went on in the garage? So Melvin, Linda & I went searching for a tree. All of a sudden, Melvin declares, “That’s it! I said which one? He said that one! I looked where he was pointing & it was a 40-50ft tree. I told him it was too big. He said, “No, the top it’s good! So I cut down a 40-50ft Evergreen so I could get the top 7 feet. He said people would take the other branches. OK! Never did anything like that before or again!
Story ½: Also in 1978 Linda and I were getting married. We decided to get married in Virginia (it’s for Lover’s). We picked a JP in Chesterfield. Everything was set. We drove from NC to VA the day before the wedding. That night when we were getting ready for bed; Mary told me her and Melvin thought it was best I didn’t sleep with Linda until after we were married. Bless their hearts…ask Linda where they made me sleep the night before our wedding. She can finish the story!!
Melvin, you’ve always had God’s heart. Steadfast in faith! I feel so blessed to have had time with him last year, during my visit, and talk about life and God. To my amazement, that conversation I could understand ever word he was saying. He spoke clearer than I had ever heard. We talked about his concerns, prayed and hugged. It was a time I will cherish forever!
…the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk…Isaiah 23-25.
Rest in peace my friend. If anyone deserves it, YOU DO!!! Enjoy not being in that scooter anymore!! Hallelujah!! Have fun flying!!
