Obituary

Evelyn L. Whitlock, 90, of Chesterfield, VA went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 29, 2023. Born on July 17, 1932, in Campbell County, Virginia, to the late Robert D. and Mabel Helen Lichford Sr., Evelyn was always proud of her Lynchburg roots guiding her to the love and pride she held for the family she made with her husband, James Whitlock who preceded her in death. Their children include Steven (Sharon), Ray (the late Diane), David (Kathy) and Laura Stoots (Tony). These children then contributed to the legacy by adding four granddaughters and six grandsons who called her Grandma. That generation has added six great grandsons and two great granddaughters who called her Old Grandma. When their kids were young, the couple enjoyed playing weekly rounds of cards with the couples they kept for a lifetime of friendship. Evelyn loved watching the snow, cardinals, holiday sweaters and matching turtlenecks, sweets of almost any kind, pruning her flowers and plants, gardening, canning vegetables, shelling beans and cooking. She was a licensed, master seamstress who enjoyed selling her infamous work at local craft shows. This spunky, little lady was never short on words, strong willed and speaking exactly what she thought, always admitting it was the one thing that got her in trouble at school. She kept everything, so she had the report cards to prove it along with letters from James while he was away in the Navy and all of her children’s keepsakes (even their teeth). Evelyn rarely missed a Sunday at her beloved Tomahawk Baptist Church and always reminisced about the mission trips she attended, her favorite being Maine. Working as a sample specialist around the local stores became one of her favorite occupations. When she was still running the roads, the day always started with the crew of McDonald’s University friends. Evelyn could also be found at choir practice, Wednesday night supper, being the customer of every month at Goodwill or adding to her massive fabric and thread collection that was never enough. Over the years, Evelyn enjoyed collecting an abundance of Longerberger baskets, any Boyds Bear collectable she could find, and numerous sets of dishes. There was never a plastic or paper product to be found when she cooked during the holidays, always using only her good dishes. In her later years, her patio was her favorite spot to sit, but also in the pasture, with the family she and James made, for bonfires with Brunswick stew. Her feisty spirit and love felt by her family and friends will be missed deeply by those she leaves behind. The family will receive friends and family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023, at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, North Chesterfield, VA 23234. Evelyn’s funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at Tomahawk Baptist Church, 12920 Hull Street Road, Midlothian, VA 23112.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to these charities that have directly helped with Evelyn’s great grandchildren: They are listed in the charity tab.
