Obituary

Richard Clayton Atkins, Sr., 90, of Richmond, VA went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 8, 2024. He was born on March 11, 1933 in Tappahannock, Virginia to the late John Travis and Ila Brooke Atkins. Richard is also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy Joyce Atkins; son, Jeffrey Lewis Atkins; and granddaughter, Amber Atkins.

He is survived by his sons, Richard C. Atkins, Jr. (Kimberly) and Randall C. Atkins; daughter, Susan Brooke DeWitt (Ron); grandchildren, Tiffany (Jay), Ricky (Myra), Dustin (Morgan), Ricky, and Robby; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Richard was a devoted husband and father who was a devout member of Friendship Baptist Church. He was a Korean War era veteran in the United States Marine Corps. During his free time, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. Richard retired from Reynolds Metals after many years of service. After his retirement he would go onto volunteer at McGuire Veterans Hospital.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd, N. Chesterfield, VA 23234. His funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Monday, March 18, 2024 at Morrissett. Interment to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, 5141 Dunbrooke Rd. Tappahannock, VA. 22560.
